Shortly after celebrating your engagement and setting your budget, you will want to start considering various wedding dates. Unless you’re completely open with the rest of your planning process, we highly suggest having a few dates in mind before contacting vendors, purchasing your dress, or even deciding on your wedding style. Your date will guide you as you make more decisions down the line, and it may or may not be the source of potential issues too. So to help, we’ve teamed up with a few of our favorite wedding experts (all members of The V List) to talk about 10 factors you should keep in mind when choosing a wedding date.

How To Choose A Wedding Date via TheELD.com

1. Meaningful Dates

One of the best places to start when narrowing down wedding date options is to consider dates meaningful to you, your fiancé, and both of your families. Think about whether you would like to get married on the anniversary of your first date or the date you got engaged. A few other dates to consider: the anniversaries of your loved ones, or even just the same day of the month as your anniversary. Side note: Think about meaningful dates to avoid, too. Check in with family members to make sure you can plan around graduations, significant birthdays, and weddings that might already be in the works!

2. Budget

You will want to consider getting married during a time when the majority of your wedding must-haves are in season, like food and flowers. You will also want to consider popular times when others are getting married, including seasons and days of the week. The spring and fall are the most popular seasons to get married, and Saturday evenings are the most desired day and time. There are always seasons, months, and days that are just as wonderful to get married that may not have quite as high of a price tag. Make sure to consider those too, and respect your budget.

“There is a budget for EVERY wedding and it’s there for a reason. Make a top 3 list each for you and your fiancé of the things that matter most. That’s where you put your money and that’s what helps to determine when you get married. If the day of the week doesn’t matter there’s often deals at venues for weekday weddings or Fridays and Sundays. But if you are set on a Saturday maybe a day during the summer would work best for your budget. If you choose a Saturday in the summer may be an indoor venue out of the heat is what you are looking for! Now you have a direction to look for choosing your perfect day!” – Embrace by Kara Photography

3. Season

Temperature and weather patterns are so important to consider when choosing your wedding season. If you’re envisioning hosting your wedding when the temperatures are more moderate, you may want to consider a spring or fall wedding. However, note that those seasons are typically also during the height of wedding season. Weather patterns are also a huge factor to think about. The summer is lovely, but it’s also when we see the greatest spike in temperature and threat of hurricanes and thunderstorms. On the other hand, snow may also affect your wedding day during the winter, especially if guests and professionals need to travel a distance in order to reach your venue.

“Think about peak times/seasons/dates when choosing a date. I know for destination weddings, this effects hotels, venue fees and food and beverage minimums. They also should think about rainy seasons/hurricane season if they are considering the Caribbean or even southern US.” –Just Save The Date Events

“If you are thinking about getting married in late fall/winter after daylight savings time ends, you need to either a) be open to doing a first look and portraits before the ceremony or b) be ok having your portraits done indoors/lit by flash. (Or be creative and have a brunch wedding!) A lot of people forget about how early the sun sets in those months and don’t plan their schedules accordingly. If you are not ok with either of those options, pick a different season!” – Nicole Jansma Photography

4. Length of Engagement

Think about the ideal length of time you would like to be engaged, and also the ideal length of time you would like to have to plan your wedding. If you got engaged during the spring and your ideal wedding season is also the spring, you’ll likely be engaged for about a year. However, if you’re hoping to celebrate your wedding day within six months, you will be planning a fall or winter wedding. Know what’s most important to you and your fiancé, and be open to compromising on time and season if necessary.

5. Wedding Professionals

If you have dream professionals on your list, make sure to contact them early on. Sometimes the availability of these pros will drive when you choose to get married. By contacting your favorite pros, you will make sure to be on their radar. Should another couple contact them for the same date, the professional will typically contact you first to see if you would like to firmly reserve the date and time.

6. Your Schedule

Always, always consider your schedule and the schedules of family and friends who you know you definitely want present on your wedding day. Even though you may love a season, it’s best not to get married during times you know are particularly stressful in life or at work, as you’re less likely to enjoy the days leading up to your wedding. Also, think about times when it will be easier for guests to travel.

“Take into consideration your guests, if you have many older people or little ones attending the wedding an outdoor summer wedding may not be the best choice for the comfort of your guests unless you provide adequate shading or tenting. These items should be factored into your overall budget.”Red Letter Event Planning

“If you are choosing a date under a year away, you may have a tougher time searching for available wedding vendors. That’s not to say it isn’t possible to still find the perfect team for you, it just might take a few more emails to find someone who isn’t booked on that date (says a wedding photographer who got married 7 months after getting engaged!) so be open to asking for referrals from those with whom you inquire who are already booked on your date.”Arielle Doneson Photography

7. Holidays

Either you definitely want to get married on or around a national holiday or you are very much against it. There are absolutely pros and cons, and we love what Danielle from DPNAK Weddings says below. Also, make sure to research the area in which you plan to marry in order to avoid popular events happening in that city, because these can cause a transportation and/or accommodation nightmare (think: marathon weekends, festivals, homecoming games, graduations, etc).

8. Honeymoon

If you’re planning on jetting off on your honeymoon immediately following your wedding, you will want to keep your destination’s season in mind. Additional fees may apply at resorts in the Caribbean during the winter because so many guests are searching for sunshine in order to escape the cold temperatures at home. The best time to head to the slopes is likely not during the summer when there isn’t snow in sight, but the winter isn’t the most popular time to visit Europe so you may find better priced options. Our best honeymoon tip: research the best season to visit your destination and then plan to travel at a time when couples and families are more likely to be working or in school (i.e: avoid holidays and peak times).

9. Lighting

Throughout the year, the sun sets at different times. Even though you might be planning your summer wedding during the winter, the sun will set much later on the day you and your fiancé get married. Research sunset times if you’re hoping to get married on the beach as the sun is setting or if portraits with the sunset as the backdrop are on your radar. Also, know the presence or lack of natural light will change the amount or type of lighting you will need to have present at your wedding venue.

10. Wedding Style

Although you will completely design your wedding after setting your date, it’s important to have an idea about your ideal wedding style. We cannot agree more with what Emily Grace Design says below!

“When it comes to designing your wedding, the time of year can be crucial if you are adamant about elements involving wedding decor. Accessibility to certain types of flowers, color options for materials, and even fighting natural elements (snow, heat, hurricanes, etc.) can become costly and frustrating. I’ve had brides panic over finding the right color shoes/costume jewelry/cardigans/ties/socks for their bridesmaids and groomsmen because it wasn’t a typical color for that season. And seriously, no one wants to have their wedding ruined by a hurricane.” – Treasury Rentals

Did you see that purple dance floor?! So much fun! And I just love how the sequins were incorporated- it really gave everything a chic, glamorous style.

Are any of you going to be incorporating sequins into your own wedding elements? (Please say yes!) If so, where will you be incorporating them?

From Kelly of Kelly Hancock Events:

We started with the Silhouettes theme from ELD’s branding and then expounded on it from there. :)  Touches of the silhouette are found on the backs of the bride/groom chairs as well as on the couples invitation.  The family style wooden farm table with X back farm chairs created a very comfortable element for the setting, and the luxe fabric of the grey linen runner added another touch of elegance, but in a very relaxed way.  To glam it up a bit – we mixed gold rimmed china, glassware and silverware with a lush greenery runner adorned with a variety of white florals.  Candles, candles and more candles of various sizes filled the table for ambience and the strung lights above the table set against the backdrop of the Lange Farm barn was the perfect touch of lighting once the sun goes down on this classic affair.  White calligraphy on pieces of broken slate was used for place cards at the table and each guests menu was hand calligraphed on a white bag housing their personal loaf of bread to take to the “Napa tasting station” for cocktail hour.

The Napa tasting station was set atop wine barrels with lush linens and greenery – completed with clean classic white china.  A variety of red/white wines were offered with various cheese pairings, grapes and olive oils to accompany each guests bread loaf. The sweet end to the evening was a beautiful 4 tier hand water-colored and fondant ruffled cake – a masterpiece set atop a wine barrel and dressed with more lush greenery.

We used a real life couple who will tie the knot this coming April!  The groom wore a classic black tuxedo with a black bowtie.  The bride was dressed in an illusion lace neckline soft tulle skirted gown with no train.  Both the bride and grooms attire spoke to the very classic feel we were going for, while not overdoing any elements and keeping it both clean, crisp, simple and yet still comfortable.  We wanted brides to really imagine themselves in this setting.  Being able to take a barn in the middle of Florida and make it feel Classic, elegant and like it could have taken place anywhere!

I love every single aspect of these rustic, organic wedding ideas! A huge thank you to all of the amazing professionals involved- show them some love in the comments below! :)

We’re focusing on tips and advice for the newly engaged this month, and I thought it would be the perfect time to also highlight destination weddings. Because after all- some of you may decide right off the bat that you want to have a destination wedding!

The 2 Types of Destination Weddings: Which One Is Right For You? via TheELD.com

I started writing a post about destination weddings and why you should consider one, but as I was thinking, I realized that there are actually TWO types of destination weddings! Now right off the bat, let’s establish that ALL destination weddings are weddings that take place in a location that will be a destination that you and/or your guests will have to travel to. Most destination weddings end up being fairly intimate in size, as people are usually traveling to the location to attend.

Now the big question is going to be whether or not a destination wedding is right for you, but first, we need to establish what the two types of destination weddings are…

Professional Destination Wedding

A “professional destination wedding” is one in which you are having your wedding in a location that is a destination for you and/or your guests, and you are using wedding professionals to carry it out. A destination wedding of this nature would include vendors such as:

– photographer

– wedding planner

– venue

– caterer & cake baker (if applicable)

– floral designer

– hair & makeup artist

– transportation

– officiant

– videographer

– entertainment

As you can see from the list of involved vendors above, this type of destination is more like a “typical” wedding, but it just occurs at a destination location. This type of destination wedding is usually a good option for a couple who wants to have a more custom, personal wedding, but still wants the intimacy that goes along with a destination wedding. Typically you will be planning the wedding (with your planner) from afar- likely with the help of the wonderful technology tools we have at our disposal now!

Sometimes a professional destination wedding will take place if many of your guests live near the “destination” location and you and your fiancé live far away. For example, you may have grown up in the destination location but have moved away, so therefore, it is a destination wedding for you.

Who a “professional destination wedding” is good for:

A couple who wants a wedding that will be custom-suited to their wants and needs, wants to work with wedding professionals to plan their day, and wants to enjoy time with their closest friends & family.

Resort Destination Wedding

A “resort destination wedding” is probably the most common type of destination wedding and what most people think of when they hear “destination wedding”. This type destination wedding is in a location that the couple does not live in, and takes place at a resort, such as Sandals or Dreams.

A resort destination wedding typically involves a package in which you make selections for your wedding based on what the package includes. Typically, many things for your wedding are included in the package, such as all vendors, food, and florals. Often times you are able to customize aspects of the wedding package, but sometimes you cannot- this is dependent on the resort and the package selected. Resort destination weddings are usually fairly intimate in size, as a resort destination wedding will often times take place at an all-inclusive resort, and invited guests will pay their own way to attend your wedding. It’s typical for a couple and their guests to create a vacation out of attending a resort destination wedding (I know I would!). We’ll be talking a little more about resort destination weddings later on this week, so keep an eye out for more info on this!

Who a “resort destination wedding” is good for:

A couple wanting an intimate wedding in a destination location who doesn’t want the stress and decisions that typically come with planning a wedding.

Now as you can see, there are definitely a few things that ALL destination weddings have in common. The location itself is what really makes a destination wedding. But for me, the winning factor is the intimacy of your guest list, and therefore the intimate celebration of your marriage. As a result of this aspect, you’re able to have more personal details, and can also have more meaningful time to spend with your loved ones. Winning all around if you ask me! But don’t just take my word for it… some of The V List’s professionals who have experience with destination weddings shared their insights:

“Destination weddings work for the couple who wants a unique, intimate experience where they really get to spend a lot of time with their close family and friends. It is good for the couple who may have a really large extended family who wants to be able to cut down on their guest list, but not necessarily their cost (a common misconception). Destination weddings are different because they aren’t just the day, but rather the whole week/weekend and it is all about creating an experience for both the bride and groom but for the guests as well.” – Destination Wedding Planner, Just Save The Date Events

Destination Weddings are the best because they are so uniquely intimate. As a photographer, I love having that kind of relationship with my couples! The images from my destination weddings have been some of the most authentic, romantic, and breath-taking images I’ve ever captured. I am invited into the story in a deeper way with destination weddings and the result is incredibly personal images against stunning backdrops that will be cherished for a lifetime.” – Destination Wedding Photographer, Lindsay Fauver Photography

Couples should definitely consider a destination wedding if creating an experience is important to them. Destination weddings have a different feel to them, as the celebration includes more than just the wedding day. The couple can enjoy activities with family and friends over a few days and the wedding guests are more on a ‘vacation mode’ so the environment surrounding the big day is more relaxed.” – Destination Wedding Photographer, Kismis Ink

So there you have it- the two types of destination weddings! I’m curious as to whether or not any of you are considering- or have decided on- a destination wedding, and if so, what kind! I would love to hear from you in the comments!
