[A note from the Editor: Hi friends! You may have heard that we’re celebrating our 5 year Blogiversary for the entire month of January with fun giveaways (see Instagram!) and special features. We’re starting our special features by celebrating newly engaged brides with a series of posts especially for those who are Newly Engaged! Throughout the next month, Carly and I will be offering up our best tips for you as you start on your wedding planning journey throughout the month (and likely far beyond). First up: how to celebrate your engagement- without driving your friends crazy!]

How To Celebrate Your Engagement (without driving your friends crazy) via TheELD.com

Social Media Sharing:

Because of our sincere love of social media, we thought we would start our celebration how-to here. Our biggest piece of social media advice: hold back. The reason for this is two-fold.

First, the worst possible way for your closest friends and family to learn you’re now engaged is to see a photo of your gorgeous ring on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram before they’ve heard the news from you personally. While your loved ones will likely be overjoyed, they’ll also feel a bit left out. As excited as you are to update your status, make a list with your fiancé and call (or text!) all of your closest friends and family first. If you’ve left a message, think about waiting to make sure they’ve received it before turning to Facebook.

Second, try not to overload everyone’s feed with updates and photos of your engagement and engagement ring. Just about everyone loves overjoyed news; however, engagement season can drive your single (and married!) friends insane with all of the updates they’re seeing. You don’t want the “It’s Monday, and no one has posted about getting engaged for at least 10 minutes. Is everyone OK?” status to be directed at you. Share away, but keep the amount you’re sharing in check.

Celebrate with Family & Friends:

One of the best parts of being newly engaged is celebrating with family and friends! If your friends and family jump at the chance to host an engagement party for you, fantastic! But if your wedding is a bit further out (usually engagement parties are held a year prior to the wedding), you should absolutely still celebrate with them.

Don’t feel like it’s a requirement to go the route of an organized engagement party though. Cozy dinners at home are usually a wonderful option. If you’re celebrating with your family separately from your friends, typically either your parents or your fiancé’s parents will host. However, if you would prefer to celebrate with your family and friends together, think about offering to host a dinner party at your home.

Other ideas: make a reservation at a favorite restaurant, opt for a wine tasting, or head to a bar that’s a mutual favorite among you and your friends. Bonus points if you celebrate with your friends and family together and announce your engagement at the celebration as a surprise!

Celebrate Alone:

Your engagement is one of the best excuses to go on a date together! Although few things top being surrounded by family and friends, don’t forget to take time to celebrate alone. If you’ve had your eye on trying a new restaurant, make a reservation. If a day exploring a city sounds more like you, plan a date to see the sights. If your schedules are both normally packed, a night in with a great movie, takeout, and a bottle of champagne is even better. Simple is sometimes even more memorable.

DO NOT Start Planning:

Whether you’re planning a wedding in six months or walking down the aisle in 18 months, remember- you don’t have to start planning your wedding immediately after getting engaged. In fact, we encourage you not to start your planning process right away. We adore our V List members, can’t get enough of our Get Inspired page or our Newly Engaged guide, and we definitely love finding inspiration on Pinterest, but there will be plenty of time for all of that.

Instead, focus on simply celebrating this special time in your life- it will likely never happen again, right? Plus, you don’t want to force yourself into making decisions immediately when you can take a bit more time to think, research, and make sure you really love the color palette/dress/vendors you find. We’ll be sharing a lot more info about this very point, so stay tuned!

PS: You might want to head over to the ELD Instagram page and follow… we have some pretty amazing giveaways going on this month! :)

Did you just get engaged? Congratulations! Let us know in the comments how you’re celebrating your engagement.

A modern style with a yellow and gray color palette is the perfect combination for this chic Palm Springs wedding captured by Lovers of Love Photography. Designed by Artisan Events, Lindsay and Tom’s wedding is full of personal details, fabulous style, and TONS of love. Lindsay is here with us today sharing more about her inspiration and planning, and she has some awesome insight…

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

As our wedding day approached, we could never have gotten all the details into place without the help of Joey and Artisan Events. They created a truly ‘down to the minute’ timeline of the big day and made sure everyone stuck to it. The day ran seamlessly and stress-free because their team was always two steps ahead of what was happening.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

We really wanted everything throughout the wedding to feel like “us”. So it was important for us to choose vendors that we felt understood us and who we are as a couple; our personalities, sense of humor, style, and overall feeling we wanted the day to have. Major props to Artisan Events and to Lovers of Love photography who both did an amazing job capturing that. We could not have been happier with our choices!

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

As cheesy as this sounds, we kinda inspired each other and our own wedding details. Tom and I are both in the design business, but we hardly ever get a chance to work together creatively. So as soon as we got engaged, we were soo excited to start designing and planning together! (Maybe even more-so than the actual marriage part…hmm) Our minds were both spinning like crazy with ideas to really make this wedding our own. We ended up designing a ton of stuff ourselves including: the invitation suite, a wedding logo, wedding program, the wedding favor (custom playing cards, our favorite!), escort cards, and a custom family unity symbol.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

The highlight of the ceremony for us was our special family unity ceremony. Tom has two kids, so we wanted to do something that represented all four of us coming together as one family. (Something similar to a sand ceremony, but that really had our stamp on it.) Together we designed our own family unity symbol that consisted of the first letter of each of our names. It was custom made into a large three-dimensional sign so that each letter could be removed individually, like puzzle pieces. During the ceremony, we each placed our initial into the puzzle one at a time to represent the four of us coming together as a family. It worked out beautifully and there were definitely a few tears in the crowd (this may be an understatement). Even a few tears from our tough teenage kids – but don’t tell them we told you!

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Don’t do anything you don’t want to do and do everything that you do want to do! Don’t be afraid to take out traditional wedding elements if you dread them. And don’t be afraid to incorporate things that may be a little out of the box if it’s something you like. I can’t tell you how many people have told us that we had such a “Lin and Tom wedding” and that is truly the best compliment we could have received. We made sure that everything had a little touch of us, and that is the best advice I can give future brides. Have fun with the planning and add some personalized twists!

I absolutely LOVE Lindsay’s advice! It’s so perfect- incorporating yourselves into your wedding is something that every couple should try to do!

Lindsay and Tom incorporated themselves into several of their wedding details… did you see those favors- the set of custom playing cards?! Which of your wedding details are you planning on incorporating yourselves into?

I’ve had today’s date bookmarked on my calendar for ages, and it’s because I am that excited to share Carly and Chris’s gorgeous navy and blush wedding with you! As a wedding industry professional and an Every Last Detail team member, I’ve worked with countless professionals and culled through photos by wonderful photographers while searching for the most meaningful details to share. I definitely have favorite photographers, and Katelyn James is one such pro.

Carly and Chris’s greatest desire was to fill their wedding day with joy both for themselves and also for their guests. They wanted to work with wedding vendors who were passionate about their work and excited to celebrate alongside them. Just from meeting her once myself, I can assure you that Katelyn James met their expectations! The pair also wanted their wedding to be simple, so they let their gorgeous venue, Big Spring Farm, in Lexington, VA shine the brightest. The flowers by Backyard Blooms fit the couple’s aesthetic perfectly, and there are so many sweet rustic details from which to draw inspiration for your own wedding day. Katelyn, thank you so much for sharing today’s wedding with us! P.S: Carly, you have the very best name. :)

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

There are so many people who helped make our wedding possible. Chris and I have great friends and family who were so willing to jump in wherever help was needed. Honestly, it was my sister, Laura, who helped me the most throughout the planning process. She was always available when I needed to process through a wedding decision no matter how big or small. She cared about every detail with me. On our wedding day, I had a friend (Mary) coordinate our wedding weekend. She was a HUGE help! She made sure that all of the details I had been working on throughout our engagement came together. She was there to take care of everything so I didn’t have to worry about a thing and we could just enjoy our wedding day.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

When Chris and I were deciding on our vendors, we really wanted a personal experience. We wanted to work with people who were flexible, easy to work with and passionate about what they do. Every single one of our vendors went above and beyond for us and made us feel like our wedding was the most important one they would ever be a part of. I felt like they were just as excited about our wedding day as we were and it was better than I could have ever imagined. Our vendors were really the best!

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

Chris and I got married at Big Spring Farm in Lexington, VA. The farm is beautiful and really didn’t need a lot of extra stuff which is a huge reason why we chose it. It made adding details so easy! I also really wanted our details to reflect who Chris and I are as people. We are both pretty easy going, simple and fun. We wanted our wedding to reflect who we are as people and as a couple. We wanted our guests to feel welcomed and relaxed.  The farm has that feel without adding much to it.  Backyard Blooms did a great job adding simple touches for us all around!

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

This question is so hard! Our wedding was exactly what we wanted it to be! Everything just felt so relaxed and we were really able to enjoy every part of our wedding. If I had to choose a favorite thing though it would probably be our first look. Chris and I chose to see each other and spend some time together before our ceremony. I loved that we were able to celebrate the fact that we were about to get married and it definitely calmed any nerves that we had. It was a really sweet time for the two of us.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

My advice would be to make a list of the most important things you want for your wedding then focus your attention on those. It is easy to get caught up with little details that will make you crazy and you won’t really notice them when the day comes. For us, we really cared about our ceremony, the dancing, food and getting great pictures. Prioritizing really helped me remember what was important about our wedding and keep stress levels down.  The little things are going to fall into place.  I would also say remember to spend time with each other without talking about wedding details. Engagement is such a sweet time for the two of you and its so easy to miss it if you are only focused on planning.

Oh I love Carly’s advice about prioritizing- that is SO important!
