I have to admit it: I adore a backyard wedding.  One of my first weddings as a planner took place in the groom’s parents’ backyard; ever since then I’ve had a soft spot for such an intimate setting!  This one, photographed by Lane Baldwin Photography, is full of gorgeous handcrafted details! Technically, only the ceremony was actually in a backyard.  But even the reception setting, at a local arts center, carried through the intimate, personal, and handmade fabulousness!

From the bride:

I knew that I wanted a small/simple wedding in my mom’s backyard with as many loved ones involved as possible…  What helped me the most in the planning process were wedding blogs like this one and Pinterest.  I did most of the planning on my own and didn’t know anything about planning a wedding when I started.  I had a general idea, but I got some great ideas and inspiration from these websites.

My favorite thing about our wedding was having my family and friends there to be a part of our day. It felt so natural and calming saying our vows with my brother as the officiant and my husband standing next to me. I will never forget sitting back during the dinner listening to everyone laughing and enjoying their meals. It was such a blessing to know that they were all there to support and celebrate the beginning of our marriage.

On the day of the wedding having my best friends and family with me helped to keep me calm and they helped to make sure things stayed organized so that I didn’t have to worry about any last minute details. They were so amazing!

For the dinner, I knew that I wanted it to feel like a big family dinner, which is why we did the “barnstyle” seating and family style passing of platters. My first inspiration for flowers and decorating was using wild flowers and herbs and keeping everything as simple and clean as possible. My florist did a great job of taking my ideas and bringing them to fruition.

The most important thing about working with someone initially was recognizing that they had a similar style to mine. There are so many vendors in the wedding industry, but not all of them are willing to work with your ideas. Having someone who has the same vision or willing to work with yours is really helpful. Also, feeling like you will get along well with someone helps so that when things get stressful they can help you and you can trust their opinion.

If you know what you have envisioned for your wedding day don’t let anyone (vendors or family) try and assert their opinion over yours. In the end, you have the best feeling about what will make your husband and you most happy on that day. Let yourself have fun and don’t stress over the small things. It can be such an amazing memory if you let yourself live in the moment!

I have to say that my favorite detail of this wedding was the table decor… Wildflowers, colored bottles, mismatched vases, lemons, limes, apples, radishes, asparagus, and brussels sprouts??? Who would have thought they could be so beautiful (in addition to being delicious)? Would you use fruits and vegetables in your wedding or even consider such eclectic table decor? xoxo, Elisa

Why do you see yourself as being Modern, Vintage, Classic, or Eclectic?

I’d say I’m truly a mix of all four styles. Modern because I know and educate myself about the latest trends. Vintage because my styles are soft, airy and full of light – I like to create the FEEL of love in all my photos. Classic because in the end, it’s all about the bride and her wants and needs. Eclectic because I use my environment and surroundings for each individual shoot to create the most unique photos. Even though I know what trends are available and use what’s “in”, trends may or may not work for everyone. So you have to be willing to step outside of your comfort zone and create something new!

What is your favorite wedding detail you’ve ever seen or created?

Since I love everything vintage, I’ve always been impressed when I see a wedding that brings the old into the new. Old cameras, mason jars, a vintage dress and shoes, vintage décor, etc., all give a wedding such a timeless feel.

What is your favorite store or brand?

I’m a huge Restoration Hardware fan! Their mix of neutrals, browns and unique metals is definitely my style. It’s the mix of modern and vintage that I love so much!

What is your favorite thing about weddings?

Ask anyone who knows me, and they know I love LOVE. I can be quite cheesy (hee hee). I never stop smiling during a wedding! People always ask me about how stressful a wedding must be, but it’s the complete opposite for me. Weddings are my playground, and I can’t imagine not photographing them!

What qualities do you possess that enable you to work well with brides and grooms?

I’d say my #1 is the commitment to the bride and groom. This is THEIR day, so I will go above and beyond to make this an unforgettable experience. My dedication, as well as my love of all things “wedding”, is also huge. Other important qualities are my willingness to meet them halfway on every last detail, being available when they need me and always showing my eagerness to create more than a business relationship, but a personal one in the end.

What steps do you take to ensure that your clients will have amazing wedding days when working with you?

Making sure the wedding day goes off as planned starts with my first meeting. Showing my clients that they can trust me comes before anything else. I often ask them to send me their inspirations and loves. The more I know about what they love, the more I can create that picturesque wedding they so desire. LISTEN to what they want. Just as in relationship, communication is crucial.

One of my favorite details is anything and everything “Mr & Mrs”, so when I saw the 3-D letters on the Sweetheart Table of this wedding, I knew I had to share them! Letters displayed on a sweetheart table like this are simple, yet still have enough of an effect to make a gorgeous statement!

I love this idea for a sweetheart table… or maybe even using letters like this as part of a tablescape! What do you think? What are you planning on doing for your Sweetheart Table? Would you do this?

Wow so this wedding I have for you all this afternoon- I really am speechless. Actually, I want to say “SWOON”… even though I NEVER say that word. That’s how gorgeous it is! The bride, Katie, and her family grew up in South Eastern France,  and she wanted to pay homage to such an amazing background by incorporating it into her wedding. Add in the superb photography of A Brit & A Blonde, and friends… the results are absolutely breathtaking!

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

My wedding planning was a true team effort, however, my aunt and my sister stand out as people who were huge contributors.  They encouraged me to use my imagination, helped me generate original ideas, and gave me the energy and support I needed to get through the wedding planning challenges.  On my wedding day, a dear friend played the role of “day-of-planner”.  He shielded me from the hiccups of the day and kept us on schedule.  I don’t know what we would have done without his problem-solving and organizational skills!

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

It was very important to me that the vendors we selected not only could understand my vision, but also could help me build on it.  All of our vendors were energized by trying something new and were committed to helping us realize our ideal day.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

Provence was the inspiration for our wedding.  My family lived in Nice before I was born in the states and my childhood was influenced by their time abroad.  For dinner we served a French-inspired meal featuring one of my mom’s famous recipes, Chicken Provencal, and we decorated the tables with colored glass filled with white flowers, lavender and herbs.  My overall goal was to keep the design simple and elegant and to leverage the beauty of our site as much as possible.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

Our favorite thing about our wedding was seeing our families and closest friends all together in one place at the same time.  We were thrilled but not surprised to later learn about friendships that were formed that day between people from different parts of our lives.  We were so happy that everyone had as much fun as we did!

A French Inspired Maine Wedding via TheELD.comA French Inspired Maine Wedding via TheELD.comA French Inspired Maine Wedding via TheELD.com

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Assemble a great support team and don’t be afraid to delegate planning responsibilities.  The many details can be very overwhelming at times, but it’s very true when people tell you that everything comes together at the end – have faith!

Absolutely breathtaking, am I right?! I must say- the foodie in me loves that they had cheese, fruits and bread on the tables for guests! But of course I’m also loving the artistic guest “self portrait” canvases and the gorgeous French vases filled with flowers and herbs! Oh, and did you spy the emerald green earrings? Katie collected some stunning vintage pairs for each of her bridesmaids to choose from- such a great idea!

Above all else, I just love that Katie drew on her background to create her wedding day. Will any of you be doing something similar for your weddings in drawing inspiration from your own lives?
