I am so honored to be able to introduce you all to my friend, Janice of Bellwether Events! A fabulous planner based in Washington, DC, Bellwether Events is the kind of wedding planner that I myself would have hired. They want you, your family, and your friends to have the best possible experience when it comes to planning your wedding. Amen to that!

Why do you see yourself as being Modern, Vintage, Classic, or Eclectic?

The Washington DC metro area is so varied that I get to work on all of these styles of weddings! We do a lot of Classic weddings, given the very traditional and historical nature of the older venues and hotels in DC. If you venture out into the suburbs, we have plenty of beautiful garden estates and vineyards that lend themselves to Vintage styled weddings. We also have newer venues like art galleries and music centers in the area that lend themselves to couples who are planning modern weddings. That being said, my favorite by far are the eclectic weddings. I like the atypical venues (a baseball stadium, for one), the challenging ideas (Willy Wonka theme, anyone?), and being able to make them into classy, grown-up parties that totally reflect the couple.

What is your favorite wedding detail you’ve ever seen or created?

In April of 2010 I planned a Willy Wonka themed wedding in Baltimore. Some of the best part of the (original Gene Wilder) movie are his quirky lines. We put the best lines on cartoon-style word bubbles and hung them from the ceiling of the room where the reception was.

What is your favorite store or brand?

Right now I am buying a lot of TOMS products. Their shoes and sunglasses go well with my casual and socially-conscious style. I find myself donning Michael Kors quite often as well. His updated but classic design goes well with the professional look I want to exude.

What is your favorite thing about weddings?

I can’t pick just one! I love sending the couple down the aisle at the ceremony. I love the reaction of the couple, their parents and the guests when they walk into the fully set reception area for the first time. I love to watch the dance floor throughout the reception.

What qualities do you possess that enable you to work well with brides and grooms?

I am able to stay calm and I am a problem solver. I can see the forest through the trees, and I can find common ground between two parties who might be having a disagreement. This allows me to work well alongside brides, grooms, parents, friends, family, the wedding party, guests and your other wedding professionals.

What steps do you take to ensure that your clients will have amazing wedding days when working with you?

I think open and clear communication is the first and most important step. Once the clients know what to expect, and understand why we are doing things a certain way, they are able to enjoy the planning process and their engagement period. On the actual wedding day, it is a fine balance between staying on time and rolling with the flow of the actual event. I will put my foot down with that pesky aunt who was slowing us down with her requests for photos, and I will drag the couple to their seats to eat dinner. All of my clients remark that they knew I was covering all of the little details, so they could relax and enjoy the day. Can you ask for more?

So, I’m sure you all know this by now, but one of my FAVORITE details is table numbers! I love how they have the ability to make a huge statement, or just be a part of the table- plus, they’re a great way to infuse a bit of extra style and personality into a wedding. These mylar balloons are one of those table numbers that makes a huge statement- not to mention that they are SO fun!

What are you planning on doing for your table numbers? Will you have something that makes a big statement, or something that blends in perfectly with the rest of the table?

I was tempted to title this post: The Most Beautiful Wedding That Will Make You Want to Buy a Ticket to Mexico Immediately. But I thought that was rather long and wordy. While looking through these gorgeous photos by Abbey Hepner Photography, I found myself uttering “Wow” and “Oh my word” over and over again. Those beach shots, the ocean views, all. that. tequila. Jessica and Lee had the right idea when they decided to fly off to Sayulita, Mexico with 40 of their closest friends and family, choosing the colors of the sunset (yellow, red, and orange) as their inspiration.

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

We had a destination wedding so I relied completely on our site wedding planner to get everything organized and put together. She was down in Mexico and we’re in Seattle, so I had to trust her with everything. We exchanged photos and ideas from the very beginning. She was so professional and creative, she almost anticipated my vision before I did. There were a lot of details that I made and brought from home and when the big day came, everything just fell into place.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

For us, the photographer was extremely important. Having a destination wedding, the photographer was really the only vendor we could choose for ourselves. Abbey Hepner is a local Seattle photographer and we met her when she was working a friend’s wedding in August of 2011. When it came time to choose a photographer, we knew exactly who we wanted to bring with us to Mexico. Thankfully she was up for the trip and it resulted in gorgeous pictures that captured our day entirely.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

Our inspiration was the beautiful town of Sayulita, Mexico. We wanted an organic yet classic feel; lots of clean ivory, bright yellows, oranges and corals to compliment the surroundings, and of course- lots and lots of tequila!

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

My favorite thing about our wedding was our location. Destination weddings are the absolute best; beautiful scenery, amazing food, relaxed environment, and above all, lots and lots of quality time spent with close friends and family.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

My advice to other brides is this: you can have the wedding of your dreams without breaking the bank. It’s easy to get caught up in images of other people’s weddings; decide what’s important to you and your groom and go from there. It forces you to be creative and prioritize what really matters. If you do that, your wedding will be beyond what you ever dreamed for yourself.

How fabulous, right? Now, who’s up for a winter trip to Mexico? (My hand is raised.)

The city girl in me love, loves a big ballroom wedding and the stunning architecture from this historic hotel does not disappoint. Lauren is what we Southerners call a “blush & bashful bride”; pink, pink and more pink! And the rosy decor provides the most beautiful complement to the pink and gray color scheme. Bryan and Mae captured all of the romantic details and had this to say about the event:

Lauren and Mike celebrated their wedding day with a classy affair at the Amway Grand Hotel, an historic hotel in Grand Rapids, MI, featuring early 20th century architecture and decor, with a romantic vibe. Soft florals accented their day, as did gorgeous textured linens. Live music filled their ceremony and reception. The event was designed and coordinated by Pearls Events, who did an amazing job of making everything fall into place perfectly.

From the bride, Lauren:

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

My wedding planner and my mother. I listened to both of them throughout the whole process and they did an amazing job.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

I wanted to make sure that I worked with people who enjoyed what they did and were passionate.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

Vintage Romantic is how I described what I wanted to all the vendors and they did an amazing job.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Take your time and enjoy the process, it is over before you know it.

It does fly by, doesn’t it? My engagement was thirteen months long and it seemed to go by so fast, not to mention our actual wedding day. Ladies, definitely enjoy the engagement period. You’re only a blushing bride once!

I just love the use of the art deco architecture (including the gold leaf ceilings!) in Lauren and Mike’s wedding. Are any of y’all marrying at a historic site? I’d love to know where!

XOXO,
Carlee
