This nautical coral and navy wedding captured by Courtney Bowlden Photography is not only gorgeous and full of amazing details, but it also has two of my favorite things- an adorable golden retriever and a military groom… be still my heart! Rachel and Dan drew their nautical inspiration from the Pacific Northwest location where their wedding took place, and the result was perfect. Rachel is here with us today to share more about her planning process…

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

My parents were a supplemental part of planning our wedding day. I honestly don’t think i could have done it without their help. My husband was deployed in Kuwait for the 9 months leading up to our big day, while I was living in Colorado planning our wedding in Washington State. My mom and dad helped me plan every little detail of our DIY wedding and was there for me during every step of the way when my husband couldn’t be (although he was able to FaceTime when we went taste testing for cake!)

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

When choosing who to work with on our wedding day, it honestly came down to how we were treated by each vendor. When we were searching for wedding venues, we were told twice by two different venues, “We don’t want you to think we are a wedding factory”. Let’s be honest, we all know that wedding venues are specifically made for weddings, so why tell us otherwise? We stuck with our gut feeling and chose vendors who made us feel comfortable and understood what we truly wanted out of our special day.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

For our wedding design, we wanted to capture the true Pacific Northwest feel of our venue, so we chose a rustic, nautical theme. I grew up in the San Juan Islands, and boating and spending time on the ocean has always been extremely significant to me. When I brought my husband to Washington for the first time (he’s from Kentucky) he fell in love with the islands. I knew he would fall in love with a nautical wedding as well!

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

My favorite part about our wedding was walking down the aisle. Dan returned home from deployment just two weeks before our wedding, and it got to a point where I wasn’t sure if he was going to make it back in time for our wedding day at all. I was so overwhelmed with happiness and emotion seeing him standing at the end of the aisle. It not only meant that I got to finally marry my best friend, but it also meant that he was home safe.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

My best piece of advice for other brides is to do what you want to do on your wedding day. You want to wear 30 dollar Sperry wedges from Amazon on your day? Do it. Nobody sees your shoes anyways. Don’t let other people dictate what you should or shouldn’t be doing with your time on your day, and don’t be afraid to say no! There’s so little time and so much to do, just enjoy spending time with your loved ones, then enjoy the day after when it’s just the two of you.

Oh I love Rachel’s advice. Speaking of shoes, I myself wore $30 shoes on my wedding day too- although I regret it because they were half a size too small! But I certainly love that she points out to enjoy the time with your loved ones. And um, can we please talk about Rachel and Dan’s adorable pup?! As a dog lover, I just melted when I saw that sweet face!

The coral and navy color palette is just gorgeous with the elegant, nautical style. Are any of you going to be using coral OR navy in your wedding color palette?

If there is one thing you must know about me, it’s this: wedding flowers are my absolute favorite detail. Naturally, I cannot get enough of wedding bouquets, especially during the spring and summer when some of the best floral varieties are readily available. During the spring, work with your florist and consider incorporating roses, ranunculus, tulips, anemones, and peonies (lots of peonies!) into your arrangements. Selecting in season blooms will help to keep your flowers within your budget while also giving your florist the creative freedom to create stunning bouquets for you and your bridesmaids. Another tip: I completely adore pastels, but don’t shy away from bright colors during the spring!

From the designer/stylist, Lisa Malott of Wish Vintage Rentals:

Our Bridal Inspiration Shoot was styled with Bohemian elegance in mind. The Bohemian style is a beautiful eclecticism represented by unique decor that is rich in texture, color and history. We selected pieces that are true to this style in the rich blue velvet of the sofa, the antique burnt bamboo table and the burnished brass of the lamp and birdcage. Our Bohemian bride sees and appreciates the beauty of small details in the world around her. She sees the artistry both in nature and handcrafted pieces. She has an equal appreciation for gorgeous plants and flowers and the beautiful intentionally torn fabric on her belt and dress. The incredible florals by Ashton Events are traditional in color and even somewhat in the flower selection, but their loose, airy, organic styling keeps the arrangements feeling more natural and Bohemian. The gorgeous gown by Sarah Seven also combines a traditional style with perfectly imperfect frayed edges of lace detailing, something special that is not overlooked by our Bohemian bride.

When planning for a Bohemian style, the key is to bring in lots of options and see what works best in your setting. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns and styles; if you love a piece (and keep your basic color palette in mind when choosing your elements), everything will come together and look beautiful on that special day, whether it is for your wedding, a photo shoot, a party or even your home decor. Sometimes the thing you thought was a “maybe” becomes a “must-have” when you see it in the space. Don’t overthink it and above all, have fun!

I definitely love this look for a bohemian bride- or any bride for that matter! And I’m kind of in love with the color palette too!

Have any of you decided on your bridal look yet?

This romantic pink and blue wedding captured by Michelle Kristine Photography is just full of beauty. What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

My mom is my best friend and it was so fun to be able to plan my wedding with her. She was there for every step of the way. My fiancé and I were long distance at the time, so my mom and I had to plan every detail together. At the time I was sad that my fiancé couldn’t be a part of the planning process, but now looking back I have such great memories with my Mom that I will always cherish.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

When I chose who I wanted to work with for our wedding I really looked for is someone who isn’t just about the service they provide. But rather about the special day of two becoming one and join families. When I chose my photographer, Michelle Kristine Photography, I knew that she was passionate about capturing every second of the day and helping you make your day is special as could be!

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

My inspiration for my wedding details was pastels with pops of cornflower blue. Blue has always been my favorite color since I was little so I really wanted to tie it in to the wedding without being the main color. Blush pinks, whites, and greens helped tie it in and create the romantic, serene feeling I was hoping to convey.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

My favorite thing about my wedding other than marrying the love of my life was having everyone that meant the most to us in one room. My favorite memory from the day was having all my bridesmaids in the limo on the way to the reception. We were dancing the Katy Perry – Firework, and coming up with a routine to do during the Reception. That helped diminish the nerves and it is a memory I will cherish forever!

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

The best piece of advice I have for other brides is to relax on your wedding day and just soak up every minute with your family and friends. I was moving away from my family after the wedding so I wanted to take in every second with them.

I also tried to not get hung up on the details, if something was going to go wrong I was going to “roll with it”. During the ceremony after my dad gave me away my veil popped out. I remember looking behind me seeing it on the floor and I chuckled. Don’t sweat the small stuff, at the end of the day it is all about you and your groom becoming one.

Oh I love Allison’s advice! And I also love her gorgeous color palette of pink and blue!

How about you? What will your wedding colors be?
