[Editor’s note: As you might know, at Every Last Detail we’re all about informing couples about weddings and wedding planning! I myself am a planner by trade, and I could talk all day long about wedding planning. But when it comes to photography, I like to turn to the pros. Which is why I’ve asked The V List member Kate Breuer to fill us in on important things to know about something that just about every couple does- engagement photos! Take it away Kate!]

What you need to know about engagement photos

By: Kate Breuer, Kate Breuer Photographers

Engagement sessions are not only a really great tool to get to know your photographer before the actual wedding date, but they also will give you a set of beautiful photos with your future spouse! I love engagement sessions and advise all my couples to have one – it’s actually included in all our collections. These days, having an engagement session is pretty common and most photographers offer them- many even include them in their packages.

Today I want to share some tips with you to make the most out of your engagement session. But let’s start at the beginning:

What You Need To Know About Engagement Photos via TheELD.com

What is an Engagement Session?

Engagement photos are photos taken while you are engaged- after the proposal but before the wedding date. They are couple photos and may or may not have a connection to your wedding. You can use them for your Save The Dates, invitations, or just to enjoy having great photos together.

An engagement session is a nice opportunity to get to know your photographer and the way she or he works. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to get away from your daily routine for a while and enjoy an hour or two full of moments and emotions with your future husband or wife!

What should you wear for your engagement photos?

Most of my couples ask me what they should wear before the engagement session. There are a few basic guidelines to follow when it comes to engagement session attire:

– Wear something you feel comfortable in. A little bit overdressed is usually a good option. Wear something nice that you feel beautiful in.

– Look at your outfits together: Do the colors match? Are you too similar? A pink dress and a red shirt might not be the best option but neither would be just black or just white. Try to choose outfits that work well together and complement each other.

– Make sure the prints and patterns work well together. If one of you wears something with huge patterns, the other one should choose a simple shirt or something with small patterns. Oh, and no visible logos please, no matter what label it is.

Another thing to keep in mind is, that you can change outfits, if you have more than one you like. Most of my couples choose one or two outfits, sometimes choosing two different locations to wear each outfit at. Definitely talk to your photographer if  you’re unsure or need help deciding- they can help you choose the perfect outfit options.

Should you get professional hair and make-up?

It depends a bit on the style of engagement session you want to have and how well you can do your own make-up. If you choose a rooftop engagement session with a long dress and high heels, then yes, you might want to have your hair and makeup done. If you’re having photos taken at the beach, a little more casual might be the way to go.

When it comes to photos, it’s always a good idea to overdo your make up just a tiny little bit, as it will be less visible in photos.

Depending on how comfortable you feel doing your hair and makeup yourself, you might want to make an appointment for professional hair and make up, or even schedule a trial with your wedding day makeup artist. I’ve had brides who did their hair and makeup all themselves and looked gorgeous, and I’ve had brides get it done professionally. Above all else, just make sure you feel comfortable! [Editor’s note: I wear makeup daily, and I chose to get my makeup done for my engagement photos! So happy I did!]

What about props?

When browsing Pinterest, you’ll find endless inspiration for engagement sessions with props- everything from a guitar, to half a flea market!

For me, I recommend that props- if any- should be something that complement who you are as a couple. Remember- your engagement photos should be about you and who you are – not the latest Pinterest trend.

But with that being said, you might want to bring a little something to announce your wedding date- like a chalkboard or a sign. Other than that, you should only bring items that enhance your story. And that could really be anything – your dog, a crown of your favorite flowers, a baseball, your favorite wine, etc.

Something you should definitely be sure to bring for your engagement session: your engagement ring! Your photographer will want to take a picture of that pretty sparkler!

How do we choose a location for engagement photos?

Finding the right location might be a bit tricky, as you don’t know how your favorite spot will work in photos. The important thing is to choose a place you feel comfortable at and love. The photographer will be able to help you decide if it works for photos. I think that you can take great photos everywhere if the location fits the couple’s personality. I’ve taken pictures in front of construction fences, at tropical gardens, in forests, and at the beach. You might also consider indoor locations or even your own home. The options are endless!

Should you practice posing?

Well, yes and no. It really helps if you take a look at your photographer’s work before the session to get an idea about what she is talking about when she tells you to “nose snuggle”. It helps you feel a little more comfortable, as you know what to expect.

But please don’t stand in front of a mirror, testing out different poses. It’ll just make things more awkward. Trust the photographer to make you look good. Don’t you worry- your photographer will give you instructions and correct you if something isn’t perfect or if it looks awkward.

What about the weather?

While I’m in sunny California now, where the weather is rarely a problem, I used to live in Germany- where it rains a lot. I had to postpone quite a few engagement sessions over the past years due to weather.

Rain is a problem- well, at least it can be. It depends on how heavy the rain is and what kind of session you were planning. I’m still dreaming about a session where a couple dances in the rain for me. And let me tell you: While backlit images with a lot of sun are beautiful, a good photographer will also be able to take gorgeous images with an overcast sky or a bit of rain. If it doesn’t rain buckets, you might not even see the rain.

Talk to your photographer ahead of time about your rescheduling options and a Plan B. Maybe you want to choose an indoor location as a plan B or as an additional location option. Or you might want to purchase a simple umbrella and rain boots and make the most of it!

Any additional tips?

Yes, I have one tip that is more important than all of the above: Enjoy the session and have a great time! Don’t worry too much and just have fun with each other and your photographer!

A romantic color palette of blush and mint is perfect for this Chicago loft wedding from Justine Bursoni Photography. Crystal and Ryan filled their wedding with unique personal details- such as favors that were USB drives pre-loaded with a mix tape by the groom- and paid special attention to making sure their wedding was reflective of them and memorable for their guests. Crystal is here with us today sharing more about her wedding…

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

When it came to planning our wedding, Ryan really helped out a bunch. It really meant a lot to both of us to make decisions together so that we were really both represented throughout the wedding. If at any point I got stressed out about something, Ryan was quick to take over and handle the situation. Our actual wedding day went very smoothly. Krysti, our caterer from Honest Foods, really took care of every detail and worked so well with Genevieve, our contact at the venue. I don’t remember one moment during the wedding, where they needed my approval on anything. Now I understand why our venue had a specific catering list that they want you to pick from, because they trust these people with putting on a perfect day.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

It was quite easy picking our vendors, because most of them had worked with each other and had nothing but nice things to say about one another. We did make sure to do some research prior to contacting them and luckily the reviews were great. The other thing that helped the most was the fact that they were able to grasp our vision without trying to change much of anything. And most importantly, every time we met with each vendor I felt comfortable and ease throughout the meeting and left feeling like they’ve got that under control.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

We knew this was our one chance to throw a huge party with all our family and friends, and we wanted to make it as fun as possible and to truly represent us as a couple. We kept things very clean and simple, with an emphasis on those items people would remember the most: food and drink and music. Our personalities came through in these decisions, and we further injected our personalities into the wedding with our DIY table markers and USB drives with a mix of our favorite music.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

That to this day, people have told us it was one of the best weddings they’ve attended. That it felt like one huge party and that it was very “us.” The other thing that I loved was that our venue was literally less than a mile from our home and located in the same neighborhood I was born and raised in, and it will always have a special place in my heart because it truly felt like home.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

The best advice I can offer to a fellow bride would be that venue is key. The venue is going to set the mood for what type of wedding you want and should speak for itself. When I saw our venue for the first time I knew there wasn’t much for us to do and that’s exactly what we wanted.

I love Crystal’s advice about the venue- it’s so true. And how amazing is THIS venue- I just love it!

What kind of venue are you choosing for your wedding? I’d love to hear in the comments!

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

During the planning process my husband and I really worked as a team and tackled everything together. On my wedding day, my planner Heather Benge helped me the most. I tend to be somewhat of a perfectionist, and it was such a relief to be able to pass off the reins to her and know that everything would be taken care of perfectly! It really allowed me to enjoy my wedding day.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

Choosing vendors was overwhelming at first, because getting married in a big city meant there were so many vendor options! I quickly realized that picking vendors who were enjoyable to be around was incredibly important, because you’re going to be communicating with them a lot and you want to feel comfortable working with them. This was particularly true for vendors I spent a lot of time with on my wedding day, such as my planner Heather Benge, and my photographer Paige Budde of Awake Photography. On my wedding day I valued not only their talent and skill at their jobs, but also their personalities and that they helped make me and everyone else feel comfortable and happy.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

I was inspired by my venue, particularly the floor-to-ceiling windows that look into the beautiful courtyard with the giant oak tree under which we held our ceremony. I wanted the glow from the outdoor fountain and the hanging lanterns in the tree coming in through the windows into the reception area to be the main focus, so we used minimal decor with lots of candles and sparkly gold accents to make everything shine. Our venue had so much natural beauty that I focused on complementing what was already there, and let that guide many of my decisions.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

Some of my favorite things (I can’t pick just one!) are the little details we added in to reflect both ourselves individually and us as a couple. Our escort cards were vintage postcards from St. Louis, which is where we met and currently live. The pictures on them showed places important to our relationship such as the university where we met, and the park where he proposed. Anyone who knows my husband knows his obsession with chocolate chip cookies, so we chose a giant cookie cake as a groom’s cake. I wore a sapphire necklace, ring, and bracelet that were a originally a gift from my grandfather to my grandmother, and were worn by my older sister in her wedding a few years ago. I know that not everyone recognized the significance of these little details, but they helped remind us that in the end this day was about us and our love for each other.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Make a conscious decision to enjoy your wedding day no matter what. Things may not go as exactly you plan, and it is easy to get caught up in details, but if you go into it determined to have fun, you will!

I love the way the decor is elegant, but it still has a bit of whimsy to it too! As Carrie said, it reflected her and her husband perfectly. Oh, and did you catch the signature drinks inspired by their hometowns? Such a great idea!

So are you planning on including any details that will be inspired by something personal to you, like your hometown? What are you thinking of doing?

A little info about Alexandra and Jonathan’s wedding:

Family means everything to the Alexandra and Jonathan, so it was only fitting that their traditions were featured on the day that they would form their own family. Both bride and groom wore family heirlooms for luck – for Alexandra, it was her great great aunt’s jade necklace from the 1920s and, for Jonathan, it was a pocket watch that has been in his family for over one hundred years.

Alexandra will never forget the excitement and anticipation that she felt in the back of the church, knowing that her next steps would lead to her soon-to-be husband. Lucky for her, her bouquet was filled with roses, rosemary, and mint, so she actually used it as aromatherapy to calm her nerves! For Jonathan, the unforgettable moment was the first sight of his bride walking down the aisle. “I felt so proud and lucky, I can honestly say it was better than I could have imagined,” he shared with us.

Alexandra and Jonathan guarantee that the craziness involved with planning is definitely worth it in the end! They encourage future engaged couples to get an organized planner to avoid worrying about the details on the big day. “Just go with it!” they both agreed.

Aren’t these colors just perfect together? Who would have thought that orange and green would make for such a beautiful and elegant combination! And I for one love that Alexandra and Jonathan recommend to get a wedding planner so you can avoid having to worry about the details on your wedding day. I of course also highly recommend it- it will be the best decision you can make!

So tell me- are any of you planning on using a unique combination of colors like this one? What colors are you thinking of doing?
