Laura and Brockett celebrated their marriage with a rustic and organic Dallas wedding at Austin Ranch in Laura’s hometown, and it’s pretty safe to say their wedding looks like it was so much fun! With help from V List Member Events by Jules, the duo thought of just about every detail. One of the most ingenious touches though are the guest books for guests to sign at each table. Wedding fact: many guests simply don’t know what to say in a guest book or they forget to sign, so placing a creative detail on a table is a wonderful idea! Kristen Dee Photography was behind the lens, and she captured spectacular photos from Laura and Brockett’s wedding day! The first look and couple’s portraits are just a few of my favorites. Welcome to Texas, y’all!

[Editor’s note: I’m currently in NYC, getting ready to go on a whirlwind tour of the latest bridal fashions for New York Bridal Fashion Week! So in honor of the beautiful wedding dresses I’ll be seeing (and sharing with you via social media), I thought it would be perfectly fitting to have a little chat about one of the most fun parts of planning a wedding- wedding dress shopping!]

It’s about time we talk about what might be the most anticipated part of planning a wedding… dress shopping! And to be exact, let’s talk about what you need to do before you go wedding dress shopping…

5 Things You Need To Know Before You Go Wedding Dress Shopping via TheELD.com

Namely, the big thing that you need to do before starting your dress search is research. Yep, I said it- research.

If you haven’t already read my own dress story, definitely start there to get the backstory. In a nutshell: I DIDN’T do my research. I was super excited to go dress shopping, acted too fast, settled for one, and then months later ended up getting a different (but perfect) dress. And guess what? All of that could have been prevented by doing one thing: RESEARCH.

Yes, I looked online, saw pretty dresses, and save the ones I liked (sidenote: back then Pinterest didn’t even exist- can you imagine). I even had a pretty specific style and designer screaming to me from my plethora of saved dress photos, but I didn’t realize it. When I was looking at dresses online, I didn’t look for WHERE those dresses were carried. I just thought that the style and designer of the dresses I liked would be at whatever stores I went to. Which happened to just be the stores that were closest to me… which weren’t exactly the best… and didn’t carry the designer that I loved. It kills me knowing that this waste of time and money could have been avoided if I had just done a little more RESEARCH!

So on to the “research” and what you need to do before you go dress shopping…

1. PHOTOS.

The only way you’re going to know what dresses you like is by looking! Start off looking at photos online, magazines (lots of dress ads in magazines, in case you haven’t figured it out yet!), designers’ websites, etc. Try to stick to actual sites that have the dress photos on them and not something like a Google Image search- it will be easier to know the designer if you do that! And then of course save whatever you like.

2. REFINE.

Just like with any other type of search for inspiration, you’ll want to weed out what doesn’t quite stand out to you after a few hours or days. Go back and look through everything again, remove photos, and refine your “collection” of dresses that you like. Repeat if necessary.

3. DEFINE.

Here’s one of the places where I messed up in my own wedding dress search. You should see some sort of pattern once you’ve refined what you saved. It could be a fabric, a dress style, a type of embellishment, a color, or even a designer. Gather the similarities and define them. Know what it is that you’re liking so you can tell the dress store. (In my case, I knew I liked laced, but what I didn’t realize was that I was obsessed with a certain designer who had 3 different lines of dresses, and I loved them all.)

4. PLAN.

Plan your day(s) of dress shopping. Look up all of the bridal shops within an hour of where you live/where you’re shopping. Look up their reviews online too- I recommend WeddingWire. Some shops are just awful and will ruin your whole shopping experience, and some are awesome. If you can, try to avoid the awful shops- trust me on this. And if your heart is set on a designer, of course look up what stores carry that designer. (Here’s something interesting to know: Bridal shops have to be a certain distance apart from each other to be able to carry certain designers, so if you’re looking for a particular designer, you may have to take a little trip [I had to drive 2.5 hours].) It’s a good idea to make appointments at bridal shops- many are even by appointment only. All the more reason to plan out your day!

5. SHOP!

Once you’ve done your research and planned out your appointments, it’s time to shop! Remember, it’s okay if you don’t find “the one” at your first store or on the first day of shopping. Also remember to keep an open mind when you’re in the bridal shops, because dresses look very different on you than they do on the hanger. Oh and most importantly, take your time and don’t rush. If you have trouble deciding whether or not you love a dress, try to envision yourself walking down the aisle to your fiance in it. That’s what helped me. :) And most of all, have FUN!

Hopefully these tips will help you in the search for your perfect wedding dress! Just remember the key point here… RESEARCH!

Those of you who already have your dress- how did you find yours? Did you research like crazy, or just let it happen? Share any tips that you feel will help other brides too!

Mallory and Tommy’s 1920s inspired wedding came to life thanks to their love of the Prohibition Era and one particular speakeasy-style bar in Prague that the two visited together. This vintage fête is the epitome of a vintage themed wedding, and not only that, but one that truly embraces it. With the assistance of their wedding planner, Along Came Stephanie, Mallory and Tommy’s vision for a speakeasy themed wedding was brought to fruition by incorporating a pale blue and blush pink color palette, decanters on each table, and custom-made antique lamp centerpieces. Lucky for us, Set Free Photography was there to capture it all, and Mallory is here with us today to tell us all about her day…

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

The combination of price and quality. I read lots of reviews and took recommendations from friends. Good vendor correspondence is also a winner for me, along with passion for their career.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

I am a history buff and have a fascination with anything during the Prohibition Era. My husband and I traveled to Europe a few years ago and spent an evening in a beautiful and inconspicuous speakeasy-style bar in Prague, Czech Republic. This inspired our speakeasy-themed wedding. We were looking for a mysterious, but toned down Gatsby feel.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

It was so much fun. Although classy and elegant, the mood was very relaxed and comfortable.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Try to embrace the wedding planning experience. Don’t get get too caught up in the possibility of chaos and try to understand why other people want an opinion on every last detail. It’s your day, but it’s also a day for everyone who loves you. In the end, no one will know the programs were the wrong color or that you forgot the flower petals down the isle. Everyone just wants to have a good time.

I love Mallory’s advice! And how awesome is it that the two even had a speakeasy-style door to enter into their reception? Talk about really embracing the theme- I love it!

So tell me- would you do something with a theme like this 1920s inspired wedding? What would you do?

A destination location for many, Amy and Cameron’s rustic Nevada wedding started out with a beautiful ceremony in a historic little white chapel in an intimate ceremony before welcoming guests to their reception at Red’s Ranch. White décor graced rustic, elegant tables, the dance floor remained packed for the entire evening, and everyone was treated to classic New York cheesecake from Amy and Cameron’s favorite Brooklyn bakery. Y’all are going to LOVE today’s ranch wedding captured by Pepper Nix Photography!

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

Cameron! He was such a calming voice to my anxiety about planning. Since we had less than five months to get everything together and did it from our home across the country in New York, we took a divide and conquer approach. He was masterful with some of our most challenging vendors.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

We got married in my hometown – a very small community with limited options. Our choices for venue, catering and flowers were all people I grew up with. For the other big items – band, rentals, photographer, etc. – we looked to resources in the nearest big(ger) city, which is nearly 300 miles away.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

The setting of Lamoille is so incredible. There is no decor that could be better. We reflected the natural setting with natural and simple flower and decor choices. And made everyone look beautiful with a lot of candle light. We created a simple, clean and intimate setting with green and white foliage and flowers and a LOT of candles. We used runners of greenery tied off with ribbon on each table and added mixed gilded birdcages with candles inside and vintage green glass votives. For my bouquet, we repeated the green and white theme–simple, sophisticated and natural.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

Marrying my very favorite person in the world.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Though we were engaged in December and married in November, we didn’t decide on the city of our wedding until about five months out. Keeping the planning window short was a huge blessing. No one needs to obsess about details for longer.

I love Amy and Cameron’s story: they met just over five years ago during a late summer weekend spent in the Hamptons. Although Cameron didn’t strike up a conversation that weekend, they crossed paths again through social media and started dating quickly thereafter in New York City. The city will always be special, but the two decided to return to her mountain hometown in Nevada for their wedding- and I think they made an excellent choice!
