Today’s New York wedding is a fantastic blend of unique, quirky, and very pretty. Sarah and Michael escaped to New York’s Buttermilk Falls Inn with their guests for their wedding day. The beautiful grounds provided a lush setting for their ceremony overlooking the Hudson River, where the groom’s brother acted as officant! Post ceremony, everyone mingled with farm animals (yes, please!) and explored the grounds before retreating to the barn for a farm-to-table dinner. As wonderful as all of those moments sound, the very best is Sarah and Michael’s choice of entertainment: dueling pianos! You will find so many moments captured by Sarah Tew Photography as well as Sarah’s wedding planning inspiration – keep reading below!

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

I am someone who has a lot of ideas, and can change her mind more times than is reasonable, so it was no trouble for me to generate a concept (or 3 or 4) for the wedding. I had a lot of help from pictures and ideas from Easy, BHLDN and Pinterest (which offered so many more ideas that it nearly became my downfall). As for actually making my ideas possible, I had a tremendous amount of help from our families and close friends and owe all of the logistical success to our amazing team of vendors, including our fantastic, always-available wedding planner, Danielle DeFreest of Every Little Detail Wedding and Event Planning.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

Michael and I really wanted vendors who were fantastic at their jobs, but also personable and flexible, people who could blend into what we saw for our wedding day. I think a wedding day should be about the bride and groom and the families and friends they are uniting. We wanted vendors who could create and capture these moments for us, help us fulfill our quirky requests and be able to disappear into the background a bit so we could enjoy time with our guests.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

My inspiration was mostly BHLDN – a little vintage, a little rustic, a little pretty with just enough added quirkiness to make it feel individual. I work in medicine and Michael in epidemiology so it was important to us to include something a little scientific in our day. We created escort cards and table markers relating to famous historical figures in medicine or public health. Each escort card contained a symbol that was used as the table marker. At each place setting, we made a card containing the biography of a famous scientist and the bio explained how that person was connected to the specific symbol. For example, Alexander Fleming who is famous for his work in discovering penicillin was connected to a symbol of vintage medicine bottles.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

I don’t know if I could pick one favorite thing about our wedding. We really wanted a relaxed weekend where our families and friends could all stay in one place and have a good time. If I had to pick one moment, it would be when my dad walked me down the aisle. The band played “Ashokan Farewell,” a song written about my home town that I had always dreamed would be played at my wedding. Not only was this a special moment for my dad and me, but I was walking towards my best friend and to-be groom, the rain held out for 30 more minutes for our gorgeous outdoor ceremony and everything thereafter felt perfectly inevitable; we didn’t need to worry or think. Shortly thereafter, we would be married, the party would start and my glass would remain full of champagne.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

As for advice, I’ll stick with something someone told me. Don’t sweat all of the small stuff, just sweat a little. In ten years, it is likely no one will remember your specific table linens, the hours you spent obsessing over a color or the exact flower in your bouquet. Focus on feeling beautiful and amazing, do just enough DIY or decision making so that you feel like the wedding represents you as a couple, hire people to help with the logistics, involve your family and friends and then enjoy yourself.  And, wear comfortable shoes.

Whimsical style, lace details, and breakfast for dinner- this aqua and lavender wedding captured by Amy & Jordan Photography is most definitely one of my favorites to date! Not only is the aqua and lavender color palette gorgeous, but the steps that Aleks and Kevin took to make sure their guests had an amazing time are absolutely perfect. I mean, who wouldn’t want waffles and bacon for dinner at a wedding?! Aleks is here with us today to share more about her planning process and wedding day…

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

When it came to planning my wedding I had a lot of help from a lot of different places. I first got a wedding planner made to have with me for the next year while trying to schedule things and make lists. It is an Erin Condren planner. I absolutely loved it. It came with a calendar and check lists and reminders. So that helped to keep me on track and to plan things. My best friend and maid of honor also help a lot. She was married two years prior and was really able to help point me in the right direction or give advice. I also hired a decorator to plan and help decorate my location. Her name is Christie Ramer and her company is called Designer Venues. She was beyond amazing and was one of the most important parts in planning my wedding. I met with her several times to discussed decorations and parts of the ceremony and reception. She was a huge part of reminding me of things I needed to remember and questions to ask of my other vendors. I found all of my vendors myself and did most of the actual planning for the day but without Christie my wedding would not have been as beautiful or as organized.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

When I was trying to decide which vendors to work with for my wedding it was extremely important to me that I felt a good honest vibe from them. I didn’t want to work with anyone that wasn’t straight forward with me or made me feel weird about asking a lot of questions. I did a lot of communicating through email and since I was finding all the vendors myself, I asked a lot of questions and verified things several times between vendors.  So I wanted someone who could get back to me in a timeline manner and who made me feel like a client they appreciated. Whenever we met with a vendor if I left the meeting feeling like I didn’t personally vibe or connect with them I didn’t pick them as my vendor.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

My inspiration for my wedding was a mix of many things. The first thing that inspired me was spring. I wanted a March wedding and for it to be filled with beautiful flowers and soft colors. It was extremely important to me that our wedding represented who my husband and I are as people. As individuals and as a couple. So I really wanted to include details throughout that represented different things about us. Since I felt this way, I wanted the overall theme of our wedding to be soft and whimsical mixed with all the things of us. I started with my favorite color which is purple but didn’t want it to look or seem prom like. So with the help of my husband, we picked a soft color platte of different shades of purple and then choose mint since it’s so beautiful and warming. It also worked so well with the shades of purple we liked. From there I wanted touches of fun details that were us and cute things about us but that were not every where or overwhelming. It all seemed to come together slowly after that and we ended up with everything I wanted. It was a touch of vintage with a whimsical feel and lots spring flowers and soft colors. Beautiful.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

My favorite thing about my wedding was all of the small details. All of the things that represented us that were simple but so great. I loved when people realized or saw things as the night went on and just gushed over how us it was. I loved hearing everyone talk about the little pieces they noticed.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

My best piece of advice for any bride is to get a planner!!! It was a huge life saver for me during every step of my wedding. I kept all my important contacts, vendors contracts and important dates in it. I took it with me to all of my meeting and was able to put any other dates or information inside it. It was amazing. I tell every bride I meet to get one especially the kind I got because it came with so many great add ons that made things even easier!

Hands down, that is the best advice! We are so glad that we were able to relive Aleks and Kevin’s wedding day with us!

You’re about to catch a glimpse of a very pretty Texas wedding; however, I do have to say the flower girls and ring bearer walking down the aisle together might steal the show ever so slightly! Katherine and Michael were married just outside of Austin at The Salt Lick. The venue has a wonderful outdoor space, and I love how the two styled their cocktail space with lounges just behind the ceremony because it allowed everyone to stay comfortably outside that much longer! The rustic, garden design flowed effortlessly into the indoor space for the reception. With florals by Westbank Flower Market, coordination by Platinum Weddings & Events, and inspiration from the bride’s day-to-day style, you’re going to love the images from Katherine and Michael’s day captured by Jennifer Lindberg Weddings!

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

Being in the hospitality business, I was able to plan most details personally. Which was amazing getting to do almost everything that your heart desires. However, Amy Mader, with platinum weddings and events helped with some guidance during the planning and 100% day of details – which was a great stress relief to take off the bride.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Be sure to research and ask as many questions as possible. The more planning, meetings, discussions up front – the less chance for something to not work out the way you envisioned it.
