Valerie and Bradley met while they were in middle school, so they decided to honor their relationship in one of the most fun ways possible- with a 90s themed wedding! Table numbers featured sayings from the decade, Bradley set up a Nintendo for guests to play, cassettes acted as escort cards, and they celebrated at Old Square School, which is a converted gymnasium.

I also love all of the heartfelt details the two included in their celebration. Valerie wore her late mother’s veil, which was such a sweet way to honor her. She also wore a broach from her sister-in-law’s grandmother, and Valerie’s grandmother sewed her handkerchief. They cite their ceremony as one of their favorite moments from their day, and the blush bridesmaids’ dresses paired with each and every mint detail provided such a beautiful look overall.

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day? 

For the planning on how I wanted the day to look and feel, I’d say that I took care of 99% of the vision.  I’m a graphic designer and all around artsy gal and was so excited to create something pretty and know that I was the client and only needed to make my husband and I happy!  I wanted a light, fun, and airy celebration and chose a look to reflect that.  As for the nitty gritty planning, my day-of coordinator Kellie Ryan was absolutely key in arranging all the moving parts.  And most notably, being the procrastinator that I am, there came a point during the last stretch where I bit off more than I could chew and my best friends and bridesmaids saved my bridal booty.  There were many little elves (including my husband, bless his heart) who pitched in here and there but Nina and Mem definitely earned the title of most valuable players…I so appreciated their help. :)

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding? 

When deciding who to work with I just went with artistic style and good vibes!  Our photographer Elaine took the light ethereal photos I was searching for and was just a cool chick, our officiant Sage was easy going and wanted to tell OUR story, our florist Nakia just got the vision we were trying to create and was so easy to work with, and our videographers at Lucky Lemon thought it was cool that we wanted to incorporate 16mm film into our “old school” wedding.  I could go on and on but overall we chose people who truly cared for their craft and we lucked out on having a great team around us.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?  

My inspiration was my husband and I!  We’ve known each other since middle school in the 90’s and I wanted to hone in on the fact that we were old buddies turned lovers, and then toss around a little 90’s throw-back flavor.  This made choosing our local events center which used to be an old schoolhouse in the 1920’s, an obvious choice and I loved the idea of turning the old gymnasium into a semi-school dance inspired reception. Our wedding date was 3 days after new years and I really wanted to merge the ideas of new and old, so we coined the phrase: old-school, new year, new life together.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding? 

My favorite thing about our wedding was that it was FUN and we could be ourselves. I loved all the 90’s decor sprinkled here and there (especially our original Nintendo set up that let our guest duke it out with the Mario Brothers), and I was so happy with the way the colors were light and happy with a pop of shimmer to usher in the new year.  Obviously having all our friends and family under one roof together while officially announcing our union was the highlight, but seeing all our hard work come out the way we hoped was icing on the cake.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides? 

Advice wise, I’d just say take a step back and remember the reason why you’re getting married – especially over those annoying late nights where you need to make countless decisions.  When your nerves are fried and the deadlines seem never-ending, just remember that this is a celebration of your love, nothing more, nothing less.  Don’t forget that this is a happy occasion, and keep the process light, fun, and be kind to each other.  You are the client, you are the bride and groom, and this is YOUR day to share TOGETHER.  Remember to have FUN and Celebrate!!!

Katie and Dusty’s beautiful farm wedding was centered so strongly on the love they have for each other and their families. The pair recited their vows and danced the night away at the bride’s family farm in Canada. Katie had dreamed of being married in the stone barn – her family’s original home – where she walked down the aisle to Dusty during their ceremony ever since she was little. With some convincing, her parents agreed and happily chipped in to make Katie’s dream a reality. And it was beautiful and effortlessly relaxed!

Aside from their ceremony site, K+D focused on incorporating color and lots of it! Katie’s bouquet was gorgeously rustic and organic with it’s bright blooms and just-picked-from-the-garden feel. I’m also obsessed with Katie’s Hailey Paige gown! As a professional wakeboarder, Dusty and his groomsmen sported shirts designed by Billabong. Color continued to be the couple’s main point of inspiration for their reception. With help from event planner and floral designer Lauren of Stone House Creative., K+D incorporated more bright shades, plus beautiful blooms, rustic wood accents, antiques, and metallics to bring their fun Heritage Arts Centre reception to life.

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

My wedding planner, cousin and life long friend Lauren Wiebe ( of Stone House Creatives) helped me the most with planning, and the day of the wedding. I was planning a wedding from out of province, and had very little time as i was in the middle of building and opening a new salon. Lauren handled my crazy schedule, and lack of being present with ease, and kept me on track every step of the way.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

Because I grew up with Lauren, and she was a part of my own wedding party it was an easy choice to involve her every step of the way. Everything I imagined she would help with, she did, and then some. My expectations were exceeded constantly, and she would even coordinate with my mom, to ensure she was involved as well.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

The stone barn location was the main inspiration for my big day. It is just a beautiful rock wall foundation, in the middle of a prairie field and it had been my dream to have my big day there since i was little. I have always loved the history ( it was my families original homestead), and the rustic hardened beauty it offered, it always told a story of love and family.  After some convincing to my dad to make it happen, Lauren was more then happy to jump on board and help as well!

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

To pick just one thing about my wedding day that was my favourite is a tough call, but if i can narrow it down to three they would be as follow.

1: Color – From the bouquet to the attendings clothes, we didn’t shy away from colour, and I enjoyed having a little something different then the classic whites, beiges and champagnes that are so popular. Lauren designed my flowers off of a Pinterest picture i sent her, and it was better then i could have imagined, the bridesmaids were given the choice to choose whatever colour the wanted to wear as long as it was the same and they somehow picked hot pink, the groomsmen had an understated Hawiaan print top for there clothing, and yet somehow it all came together.

2: Photography, I calll these the lasting memories of the day, I was fortunate enough to have an incredible photographer, who was able to easy my nonphotogenic self into a comfortable human in front of the camera for the day. He capture our true emotions, and did the setting justice.

3: Location and a sense of Family. My location was truly a dream come true, and we had incredible weather in a forcast of doom, my mom worked tirelessly on having flowers planted everywhere for the day,and my dad cut a pathway to the barn through the tall prairie grasses. My own aunt and uncle officiated the service, and were able to connect the heritage and history of the location, to the importance of loving family and friends and the relationships that were so important to us on our special day.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

I would highly suggest having an event coordinator for every bride who wants a dream day without the stress of trying to figure out every little thing on your own. Making final decisions are hard enough, let somebody else eliminate steps by suggesting the best vendors, and keeping you on track of everything you might need.

Lastly I would just encourage all brides, “not to sweat the small stuff ” Just remember what the day is all about, and keep your focus on the love for your husband, the love for your guests, and the love in your future! .

Claire and Mike met during their senior year of high school, and they’ve been together ever since! The pair got engaged in San Francisco and thoughtfully decided to celebrate the rest of the evening together rather than dashing to call family and friends. I love their intentional start to their engagement that ultimately turned to ways in which to honor their guests at their reception.

While planning their Sonoma wedding, Claire notes she and Mike were so excited to work with newly established wedding industry businesses – something Claire is passionate about as she embarks on her own small business journey with her wedding planning business. Claire also believes “less is more” (so do we!), so she used the tiles surrounding the fountain at Sonoma Golf Club, their venue, as the inspiration behind their wedding palette – shades of blue, green, and white. Claire’s bow-adorned dress is what dreams are made of, their alfresco dinner complete with golden hour light looks like it’s straight out of a dream, and I love how much Claire believes the bride and groom are the hosts of their wedding and therefore should meet and greet with all of their guests and set the wedding’s (fun!) tone.

I have been involved in the wedding industry for over six years, so I did most of the work on my own. I was able to have a sounding board in a well established San Francisco based wedding planner, Kathryn Kenna of The Wedding Resource. When I was 18 years old I began interning with Kathryn, and then ultimately working with her as her day of assistant. To ensure that every detail I planned prior to the wedding was carried out I hired a day of coordinator, which I recommend to anyone no matter the size of your celebration.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding? 

The most important aspect of wedding planning is to create a reliable team of vendors. I wanted to work with people who were easy to get along with, enjoyable, and accountable. Having recently started my own event and wedding business I was also interested in working with vendors who were also new to having their own businesses. I’m always looking for ways to support up and comping talent in the event industry.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?  

Our inspiration was family. Everything we selected and the way the evening unfolded was about sharing this special day with our family. My husband and I are very family-centric, and we wanted to create a beautiful setting for everyone to gather. The most design inspiration I used was the venue itself. The courtyard where we had cocktails has Spanish tile details. I picked up on the blues in the fountain tiles and ran from there. Different hues of blue were all over our wedding. I wanted to use the setting, both designed elements and natural elements throughout the space.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding? 

Too many to pick just one! One of our favorite elements of our wedding was our al fresco dinner. It was so fun to enjoy dinner outside as the sun was setting. Even though it was outside it was an intimate space, so the energy was palpable. Another one of our favorite elements was the ceremony. It was so great exchanging vows, laughing, and crying all while everyone supported us. It was magical! I think it’s safe to say that all of our guests will remember our ceremony forever. It had some very funny, quirky, loving, inspirational, and deep moments!

What is your best piece of advice for other brides? 

Pinterest is such a great tool, but it can also make you foggy with ideas and details. Pick a few elements you want to do really well, and focus on those. I always say less is more, and it isn’t more true than when hosting a wedding. 

Another piece of advice is to take on a role of hosting. Do your best to say hello and talk to each guest. It’s up to you and your bride/groom to set the tone of the celebration. It is your special day, but do your best to make everyone feel a part of it.

Taking a cue from the gorgeous Italian-inspired Bella Collina, Jennifer and Richard opted for a classic, rustic, and completely gorgeous garden wedding. The duo turned to wedding planner Blush by Brandee Gaar to help them create their dream wedding day, and we are so very glad they did! A color palette of peach and gold was the perfect complement to the rustic surroundings, reminiscent of the Italian countryside. Sequined table runners atop farm tables, crystal candleabras, and gold-dipped table numbers are just a few of the design elements that have us absolutely swooning. And of course all this beauty taking place under the stars is the perfect ending to a beautiful day, captured by Kristen Weaver Photography!
