Well, in case you haven’t noticed, I love details. ;) In my chats with photographers, planners, brides, bloggers, and pretty much every person who says the word “wedding” to me, the term “details” almost always comes up. I’ve even had photographers show me a wedding saying, “Well they didn’t really have any details…” when the whole wedding was FULL of beautiful details!

Once I stopped to think about it, I realized that I myself really had no idea what details were “back in the day” when I was planning my own wedding. Yes, I knew that there were certain things that I needed for my wedding, like centerpieces, bouquets, things that were necessities. But then again, there were also details that I had no idea about, and thus I was up until the wee hours the night before my wedding making them. Because I didn’t know. And most of all, I didn’t have anyone to tell me about them!

So I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve never really *actually* touched on what details ARE- I’ve always assumed that everyone just knows. So today, I’m all about the details (even more than I am every day)!

[Editor’s note: Remember- one person’s concept of details may be different from another person’s take on details. These are my own opinions on details. :) ]

In addition to knowing that I LOVE details, you probably also know that details are indeed a major topic in weddings. But it’s really pretty simple. Details are everything that make a wedding. [Note: When I use the word “wedding” I am referring to the celebration that follows the marriage of two people in love.]

Details…

… are what make a wedding unique. They set your wedding apart from your best friend’s wedding- that is at the same exact venue because you both loved it so much.

… allow you and your fiance to tell your story and infuse your relationship and personalities into your wedding- the wedding that is the celebration of your love.

… are what decorate and accent a wedding. Flowers, candles, chargers, linens, etc- the pretty things. :)

… are a theme and a style of a wedding. Vintage, peacock, modern, beach- I don’t care what the theme or style is, but details always help to define it.

… are things that enable your to remember your wedding day. Guest books, fun prints to sign, a card catalog of guests, etc.

… keep guests informed. Yep, informed. Invitations, menus, table numbers, signs… because let’s face it, there is A LOT of information you have to share with guests for a wedding!

… are ways for guests (and you, duh) to have fun, enjoy themselves, and celebrate your marriage. Specialty drinks, games, photo booths, candy- they’re all details!

In a nutshell, details ARE the wedding. I really and truly think that no wedding is complete without details. The amazing thing about details though is that everyone has them, because so many details are things that you just have to have for a wedding to take place. The key is for those details to be reflective of you and your fiance. As I always say, you want your guests to walk into your wedding and say, “This is so your name here and your fiancé’s name here!” Make that your goal. :)

So now tell me what details you’re having (or already had) at your wedding that you’re most excited about! My favorite detail about my wedding, as you may know, was my olive oil and vinegar favors. ;) Okay, and GO!

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

My mom, my sister and my Aunt Kathy. My Aunt Kathy was pretty much my wedding fairy godmother. She found the venue, arranged and hosted our spectacular rehearsal dinner, made all of our welcome bags, found our “reverend”, gifted me tons of beautiful outfits for my honeymoon from the gorgeous local boutique she manages, made and supplied most of our wedding decor and somehow she also had time to listen to my every crazy concern or worry! My sister and my mom were by my side for every single detail and I couldn’t have made it down the aisle without them. They all were such a huge source of information, support and patience! (I was not a very laid back bride) I cannot ever thank them enough!!

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

Budget and quality were the two most important factors in who I would choose for vendors. Since our wedding was a destination wedding in Florida, almost all of my research was done online. Feedback from other brides on sites like WeddingWire were critical in helping me make most of my vendor decisions.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

Our ceremony felt magical to me! The setting was perfect and everyone I loved was there! My husband and I wrote the ceremony ourselves, chose all of the music that felt special to us, and a family friend graciously accepted our offer to be our “reverend”. The whole thing was all so intimate and unique to who we are. The whole experience was extremely powerful and I will never forget a single moment!

Did any of your vendors do anything special for you before, on, or after your wedding day that you would like to share?

My wedding photagrapher Kristen Weaver was by far the best decision I made for our wedding day. Besides providing me with incredible images of moments I will cherish forever, throughout the day of the wedding she was always by my side providing me with ANYTHING I needed. At one point during the reception, I started to feel a little faint and made my way to the bathroom to take a minute to regroup. When I looked up from the mirror Kristen was behind me holding a glass of ice water to help me cool off. I hadn’t told anyone I wasn’t feeling well and yet there she was with exactly what I needed. She and her team are wonderful and I jokingly like to call them the “bride whisperers” because they literally speak the language of the crazy, stressed out bride.
Also the team at the Jupiter Beach Resort and Spa went above and beyond to accommodate all of our needs. Jonathan and Theresa were amazing! Besides being unbelievably professional and knowledgeable they were so kind, understanding and fun! Jonathan promised me I would have my dream day and he and his team delivered! I literally sent them hundreds of decorative items (vases, knick knacks, votives, picture frames) for the reception and they set everything up beautifully without any direction or real instruction from me. They promised me I would have nothing to worry about on the day of the wedding and they took every measure possible to ensure I had a blissful, worry free day!

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Don’t sweat the small stuff! Smile, take a deep breath and try to really be present in every moment of the planning process and the wedding day! All of these experiences are memories you will cherish forever so try to enjoy the process and not get too caught up in the little details. That being said, if there is something that is really important to your and your future husband don’t let other people’s opinions derail your vision. Inevitably your wedding day WILL have a hiccup (or two), don’t let it ruin what the day is really about! Just focus on the life you are about to create with the man waiting for you at the end of the aisle!

Aw, I love all her advice and insight- thank you for sharing your wedding day with us Colleen!

I feel like I actually was at the wedding, don’t you? I just LOVE being able to feel and see the emotion through the photos. And of course it’s so nice to see such an adorable couple so in love! Now let’s talk details- I’m in love with those bouquets and the centerpieces. And how about the heart and arrow design motif used for the table numbers and menus? So cute! Of course I have a big thank you to Kristen Weaver for sharing this wedding with us! Enjoy, and don’t forget to let me know what your favorite part of this wedding is in the comments! :)

What advice do you have for a newly engaged bride?

Try to give yourself as much time as your can planning your wedding. I see brides that are so excited to get married that they try to plan in a short time frame which can be stressful. I also encourage brides to take their time and research the right vendors for their style and personality.

What is your favorite thing about weddings?

There really isn’t one particular thing about a wedding that I love. I like it all. Each wedding is so different. From the dress and accessories to the floral and decor. I just love the entire experience of a wedding.

Well friends, in addition to Tuesday being a day for inspiration, it’s also a day for insight- Pro Insight that is! This week’s Pro Insight post comes to us from a new member of the Every Last Vendor photographer family, Studio Eleven One! Today Micah is sharing an experience with us in regards to a wedding day schedule and logistics- two very important things for a wedding day! Take it away Micah!

This past summer I had a wedding that went way off schedule and was almost a disaster. The piece of advice that I want to share today with all the brides and grooms planning their weddings, is to not do what my couple did!

In a nutshell, the couple rented a room at a hotel to do all the pre-ceremony getting ready part of their wedding. The problem was that they only rented one room, against my advice. I really tried to impress upon them the importance of two separate rooms for the bride and groom, but they were trying to be budget conscious and so they only booked one room. Let me give you a little history on how the day occurred…

Pro Insight: Getting Ready, Logistics, and Sunsets! via TheELD.com

My brother and I arrived to photograph and film the bride, her bridal party, and family getting ready at their hotel. They had a party bus come to take them from the hotel to the wedding venue across the bridge- not exactly a quick ride down the road. The groom and his party were to arrive when the girls left so that we could do their getting ready shots.

Well first of all, how many times are a bunch of guys having a good time going to arrive on time? It definitely didn’t happen this time- they were 30 minutes late. (This is a large amount of time when you’re having a wedding that runs on a schedule, and that is outdoors just before sunset. People may wait, food can be kept warm, but the sun waits for no one.) The bus arrived back to the hotel to pick up the guys. We climb aboard and are over halfway to the venue when the groom realizes he forgot the rings, the marriage license, and the money for the caterer. So we turn around to retrieve them. I remained calm but as I am sitting there, I can see the sun sinking fast.

When we finally made it to the venue, we leapt out of the bus. I ran inside to get a shot of the reception before the guests entered and then ran out to the ceremony. There was no time for adding flashes or lights to our equipment even though the sun was going down. The ceremony went on without any problems and it was beautiful and emotional. Regardless of the delay or anything going on around them, two people in love were being joined in marriage. No stress, no problems, just the two of them was all that mattered. We did our job and we still got amazing photos and video. We didn’t let the setback stress us or ruin their big day.

Pro Insight: Getting Ready, Logistics, and Sunsets! via TheELD.com

But there were consequences to that one decision. The bride did not get her beautiful sunset photo after the ceremony that she had dreamed about and spent over a year talking with me about… it was dark and the sun had set into the horizon. The reception was also delayed and therefore shortened their time to enjoy their party. Luckily, we had a trash the dress session scheduled and we gave our bride the photo of her dreams- just with a different sunset and not on her wedding day.

We all understand the need to try to stay on budget and stretch our hard earned dollars. This couple had spent well over a year planning their dream wedding and invested a great deal of money. Then, in the name of saving a few dollars, their wedding day was almost single handedly destroyed

Pro Insight: Getting Ready, Logistics, and Sunsets! via TheELD.com

The moral of my story is don’t take the chance to have your whole wedding go sour over one small expense. In the whole scheme of your budget and wedding day, it’s a small amount. In addition to that, the best decision overall is to hire a wedding planner so that they can be there to assist you and make sure that things aren’t forgotten like they were at this wedding. Why spend your wedding day having to deal with all the details when you don’t have to? You should be able to sit back and relax during this one special day in your life- and let boys be boys!

Wow, definitely something to consider! Let me tell you- organizing the wedding day is definitely quite a feat! You have the bridesmaids, the groomsmen, the parents- and the transportation for every can be killer too! So do yourself a favor and make it as simple as possible. Have 2 rooms or places for both men and women to get ready at, and if you can, hire a wedding planner so they can worry about it! :) A big thank you to Studio Eleven One for sharing this insight with us!
