Inspired by the very couple pictured here, Chris and Chrissie, this vibrant, colorful, and eclectic wedding inspiration is so perfectly reflective of this artist and musician who are so incredibly in love. The designer, Erica of Folie à Deux Events, turned to her own artistic muses from the art and music worlds and very quickly landed on Frida Kahlo and Joe Strummer, lead singer of The Clash, to draw even more inspiration for Ana Teresa to capture. Erica explained her inspiration and design even more perfectly than we could ever put into words, so she’s joining us today to share:

“I felt drawn to Strummer’s punk rock, anti-racism, anti-fascist message and Kahlo’s depiction of her struggle with western culture, disability, and self-worth through her surrealist folk art. With all that is happening in the world, I feel it is important to find beauty, celebrate love, but not to forget the struggles we all face and that are still to come. That we cannot forget that even decades after these two artists were sharing their messages, that even with some progress, we are still dealing with many of the same issues. Many of the stylistic details of the shoot are references to elements in the art or lives of Frida and Joe.”

Kasey Kyprianou of Revelry + Heart created an unique invitation suite inspired by punk rock concert posters and incorporating hand-drawn illustrations of the roses varieties we selected. The invitation was printed on fabric which gave the piece a more textured, vintage feel. She used a cigar box that she found that read “Revolution Te Amo” and lined it with more of her rose pattern to display the invitation suite. The menu she created features some of Chris and Chrissie’s favorite dishes! Kasey believes in creating highly individualized suites for her clients and loves to utilize mixed media in her stationery design.

Our florist, Lee Moore Crawford of Hana Lee contributed art and objects from her collection of Frida and The Clash memorabilia along with her collection of NC Pottery and hand-blown glass, natural hand-dyed ribbons and textiles, as well as some vintage wares to the styling of this shoot. Hana Lee is committed to bee friendly, seasonal and zero waste floral design and these principles were used to create designs for this event!

The blue vases and pots, dried flowers, greenery and succulents were homage to Frida’s house in Mexico City , Casa Azul. The roses and thistle were homage to the Britain and punk rock culture. The black Baccara roses mixed with the pink, magenta, golden yellow, and white were chosen to blend the visual elements of Frida’s art with the punk rock aesthetic. To have the event bursting with roses was an expression of the passion both of these artists applied in all aspects of their life and messages that still remain strong today.

Isn’t this design- and all of the thoughtful, intentional inspiration behind it- amazing?! We absolutely love when there is meaning behind wedding designs and details, and all of this was a perfect example.
