It is no secret that I love anything and everything pink. So when I saw today’s wedding, I pretty much fell instantly in love with everything about it- from the amazingly gorgeous florals, to the fun bridesmaids dresses, and of course the fabulous photography by Casey Connell Photography! In my mind, this bride did pink just right

From the bride…

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

I looked through tons of wedding magazines and would fold down the pages of everything I liked.  The magazines helped me get ideas on everything like my dress, bridesmaid dresses, wedding party gifts, flower arrangements etc.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

The most important thing was that they had experience, a good reputation, and well versed in their profession. It made me feel better when I had a question and they knew exactly how to answer it.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

Our business was one of the top inspirations for our wedding.  We own 16 Handles Clifton Park, a self-serve frozen yogurt shop.  We based our favors, the dessert, and the table names all around the business.  We had hot fudge and caramel that were homemade for our favors. We brought in frozen yogurt from the store as part of our dessert.  The tags that our guest picked up to find out their table name were tied onto ice cream scoops and all the tables were named as one of the flavors we have in our store, for example Go Bananas.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

My favorite thing about our wedding was my dress. I absolutely loved my dress!

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Do your research and make sure you triple check the details before your wedding day so that on your wedding day you can just think about yourself. Leave the planning and details to someone you trust, like a wedding coordinator at your venue or a wedding planner. Enjoy every last second because the day goes by in a blink of an eye!

I just LOVE that they themed their wedding around their frozen yogurt shop! Not only is it personal and sweet, but it’s so fun too! I mean, who doesn’t love frozen yogurt? And hot fudge for favors? Yes please!

Ashley and Eric traveled from Chicago to Nashville, TN for their destination wedding at Historic Cedarwood, which was full of fabulous rustic details that were beautifully captured by Kristyn Hogan! According to Kristyn, the couple are avid wine enthusiasts, which is wonderfully obvious from their fun DIY details, including wine cork letters and wine bottle table numbers!  I especially love the hanging bottles in shades of purple, and the popcorn bar! The resulting wedding is both sophisticated and whimsical, and the photos are drop-dead gorgeous!

As you may know, it’s one of my favorite things to take a couple’s interests and personalities and infuse them into their wedding day. I think this wedding speaks to me because they made one of their passions (wine) the whole focus of their entire wedding, and they did it so well! I love that something that the bride and groom enjoy turned into a destination location for their wedding day. We usually think of beaches when we think of destination weddings, but this gorgeous feature shows that there are a lot more possibilities.

Would you consider having a destination wedding at a non-beach location? How will you incorporate your own personalities into your destination wedding planning?

Why do you see yourself as being Modern, Vintage, Classic, or Eclectic?

Classic all the way. I’m drawn to timeless design in all things and I want my work to be the same. We try to achieve powerful and compelling photos with light and emotion, not necessarily stylistic editing. Said another way; it’s about whats going on in the photo, not what we can do to the photo.

What is your favorite wedding detail you’ve ever seen or created?

I knew you’d ask that! Here goes… I’ve shot countless of cool shoes, rings, stationery and place settings. They get more creative and beautiful every year.

As far as my favorite, it’d have to be from a wedding I shot a wedding last summer. The wedding was held on the family’s ranch in the mountains of eastern Oklahoma. It’s a breathtaking piece of land. The bride, Raegan, had grown up going to that land and has a childhood of memories there. She always said she wanted to get married there, and she did. Her husband, Brandon, proposed there under a tree that had this carving. I thought it was perfect. It was real, and had an amazing story behind it.

What is your favorite store or brand?

Keep in mind, I’m a guy so this may not ring a bell : ) I love BillyKirk-They’re leather craftsmen from NYC. I strive for true craftsmanship in my personal life and in my work and these guys are true craftsmen.

What is your favorite thing about weddings?

It’d have to be the process of seeking out meaningful moments and relationships. Powerful moments don’t just jump out at you and say “take my photo now”. You have to be inquisitive and observe body language. I really enjoy shooting details and portraits, and I see that as completely central to documenting a wedding. That said; I always find it a rewarding challenge to try and document the unseen little moments as well.

What qualities do you possess that enable you to work well with brides and grooms?

Before I jumped into photography full time, I was a youth and college pastor. I think those years spent working in the Church, if nothing else, gave me a unique tool of perception. It was my job to be a servant and meet people’s needs. I still carry that into the service I give my clients. In addition to the fact that my father and my grandfather are entrepreneurs and run their own businesses. My Grandpa was a printing press repairman and my Dad is a carpenter by trade. I’ve grown up watching them cherish the relationships with their customers and seen their businesses grow on that foundation.

Vendor of the Week: Josh McCullock Photography via TheELD.com

What steps do you take to ensure that your clients will have amazing wedding days when working with you?

I’m best described as “even keel”. It takes a lot to get me super excited. In the same respect, I don’t get stressed easily . As a wedding photographer, stress is part of the job. I’ve had the chance to meet accomplished photographers outside of the wedding industry and they always express something along the lines of “I can’t shoot a wedding, it’s way too stressful”. Well, if you want to be a wedding photographer, you eat stress for breakfast.
I think the ability to walk into any situation, with varying lighting and time constraints out of your control and create something beautiful and compelling is a great challenge. I want my brides to be able to take a deep breathe when I’m around, be themselves and enjoy the fleeting moments.

Isn’t his work just breathtaking? Go to his ELV gallery to see more of his work, and of course check out his website to see his recent work! Considering 85% of my wardrobe is striped or dotted and my own wedding included a navy and yellow color scheme, it’s safe to say that I am pretty pumped for today’s wedding. Striped ribbon and a polka dot wedding cake? Please! And what’s even better than preppy colors and patterns? High school sweethearts! This adorable couple has been together since high school and their love just shines through in these photos by Kelly of Spindle Photography! The sweet bride, Sarah Grey is here to share her insight on planning a perfectly preppy navy and yellow wedding:

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

For the planning process, I have to give major credit to the people around me. I was extremely overwhelmed trying to plan a wedding during my first year of law school, and I absolutely could not have done it without the help of my friends and family. My budget required some DIY, but I am terrible at making things. I’m so grateful that other (more talented) people were so willing to step in and help out. One of my best friends/bridesmaids, Leenie, designed my invitations for me. My Aunt Laura decorated the flower girl basket and other little things like that. My sister Elizabeth made the chalkboard sign announcing the donation that we made for our wedding favors. My mom and my sister/maid of honor Lilly pretty much did whatever I needed them to whenever I needed it.

On the day of, I think the key to having everything go smoothly was having a wedding coordinator. I didn’t have the budget for a wedding planner, but I knew from prior experiences that if there’s not a day-of coordinator, the bride’s family ends up running around trying to handle everything. I wanted my family to be able to relax and enjoy the day. I ended up choosing a venue that had its own coordinator, which was great because she was familiar with the venue and all the little details like how to best set things up, traffic flow, etc and she was used to working with the catering staff. On my wedding day, she made sure that every thing and every person was where it needed to be when it needed to be there. I literally didn’t have to worry about a thing. Having almost no stress on my wedding day was worth every penny. One other small piece of advice that I have is to be very thoughtful when choosing your wedding party. That can be a really difficult decision because you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. But after some prior experiences being in other people’s weddings, I knew that I was only going to ask people to be my bridesmaids who would make my wedding day easier, not people who would complain or cause drama or stress.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

For me, budget was a major consideration because I had very little wiggle room in my budget. Beyond that, I really wanted vendors who were easy to work with and would make the process less stressful for me. I actually chose several of my vendors by reading reviews on weddingwire.com. I didn’t have many friends who were married before me, so I figured reading online reviews was the next best thing to getting personal recommendations. I was planning my Birmingham wedding from Nashville and on a crazy schedule, so I was lucky to have vendors who were responsive and easy to communicate with via email. From the beginning, the thought of wedding planning made me more stressed than excited, and I did not want to get bogged down in all of the small details. I feel like my vendors took my basic vision and ran with it, and everything turned out even better than I could have imagined.

What was your inspiration for the wedding details and/or design?

When I got engaged I started avidly looking at weddings on wedding blogs, photographer websites, and Pinterest. I chose the color scheme after seeing photos of a gorgeous navy and yellow wedding. I thought the colors were simple and classic and matched my preppy style. I loved the way yellow flowers pop against navy bridesmaid dresses. I wanted the wedding to have a relaxed, rather than formal, feeling. Most of all, I wanted it to feel Southern. I never really embraced my Southern-ness until I went off to college in the north. With all of my and Matthew’s northern friends coming down to the South for the first time, we wanted to welcome them with some good ole Southern hospitality. This informed our choice of venue (we loved those wrap-around porches), our choice of food, and the aesthetics of the event.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

It is so hard to choose just one thing! There were so many little moments that were so wonderful: walking down the aisle, hearing the vows that my husband wrote just for me, having a few minutes alone to marvel in the fact that we were actually married before making our entrance at the reception, dancing with my friends and family. I think I have to agree with Matthew that overall the best part of the wedding was having everyone that we love all in one place. They are from all over the country, so it was really a once in a lifetime kind of opportunity. We enjoyed every minute of it.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

My biggest advice for brides who are in the planning stage would be to not sweat the small stuff and try to enjoy it. Some people easily enjoy wedding planning, but I was not one of those people. What I learned is that you can’t try to please everyone because it just won’t work. Even when people are pulling you in different directions, ultimately they care about you and probably just want you to have a wonderful wedding, so don’t be afraid to speak up about what you want. It’s your wedding after all. And don’t get bogged down in the minutiae. You may not get to every single item on your to-do list, but your guests will never know and your wedding will still be beautiful.

Sarah Grey and Matthew relied on a day-of coordinator to ensure their wedding ran smoothly. Are you planning to hire a wedding planner or coordinator? I’d love to know!

XOXO,
Carlee
