What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

My (now) husband and I did most of the big idea planning from afar and my Mother helped me check items off the lists!  She planned my sisters wedding a few years ago and knew exactly what to do!  The innkeeper at Magnolia Manor was wonderful… helping us put our ideas into reality for the big day.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

I always wanted an elegant, simple and country wedding- which in theory sounds easy but is not!  Once we found Magnolia Manor, we knew it was perfect.  Since I live 3 1/2 hours away from the wedding location, it was very important that she could take care of everything!  We sent a suggested menu, had one planning meeting and everything fell into place.  A ‘turnkey’ wedding was perfect for us- we didn’t have to sign a million contracts, and had a ‘built-in’ wedding planner!

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

My grandmothers were my main inspiration… they were elegant, classy and always themselves.  What I strive for everyday! I wanted to have a wedding that was comfortable, not too serious and mostly fun for both families coming to celebrate.   We (my husband and I) wanted it to feel like a Sunday supper!  I picked my favorite things- blue and white china, homemade anything (especially pickles and quilts!), roses, hydrangeas and made that the common thread for the day.  I tried not to look at too many pictures and to always go with my gut instinct.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

My favorite thing was the weather that day & the food!  We had a 3 p.m. outdoor wedding in November… very risky! It ended up being 70+ degrees that day and cooler that night.  Our guests were able to enjoy the sunshine and play some games during the cocktail hour and then sit down to a delicious dinner… It made the day feel that much longer and relaxing and a day everyone was able to enjoy! We were also married by the same Pastor that married my parents and that was so very special for us.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

My best piece of advice… elope! Just kidding!  Always remember what the end goal is- a wedding and a new family formed.  The best advice we received was that anything over the vows was frills – don’t try to do everything, and do what you want at the same time- it is a delicate balance!

Vintage Navy Blue North Carolina Wedding via TheELD.comVintage Navy Blue North Carolina Wedding via TheELD.com

I think I’m in love! I absolutely adore how these two knew their style and truly made it a part of their wedding day from the venue to the decor you can really tell they thought about everything.

And, I love her advice! Don’t sweat the small things and keep remembering that at the end of the day, you are going to be married to your true love! One of the biggest ways to make sure you aren’t stressing before your big day is to have a team of amazing wedding pros behind you so you can relax and just enjoy!

So who do you have behind you that you know is going to make sure your day is extra fantastic? (If you are looking for some of those amazing wedding vendors check out Every Last Vendor!) And how amazing are her bridesmaids’ outfits?! Those glittery skirts- LOVE!

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!

Cheers!

Samm

With old-town charm and whimsical details, this peach and pink Savannah destination wedding from Shannon Christopher Photography and Morgan Gallo Events is full of darling little details you’re sure to love! Savannah is a gorgeous Southern city that’s full of romance and intrigue. Today’s couple traveled there on their first vacation together, later got engaged in one of its gorgeous squares, and decided to marry at the spot of their engagement!

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

Alysse, our wonderful planner from Morgan Gallo Events, helped us the most with the planning process and on our wedding day. Living in Cleveland and having a destination wedding in Savannah, it was important for us to find someone who knew the “ins and outs” of Savannah and could help us find great vendors that fit within our budget. Alysse put us in touch with so many amazing vendors that helped make our wedding special (our very talented photographer Shannon Christopher, Jeremy Davis & The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra, Julie from Garden on the Square, The Olde Pink House and Back in the Day Bakery, just to name a few).

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

We wanted a planner who was easy to work with and who had a background in design with an aesthetic that would reflect our personal style. We also wanted someone who could take care of all the details leading up to and including the wedding day, so we were able to enjoy the weekend with our guests. Jason had enlisted Alysse to help with the proposal, so we knew she was the right person for the job.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

We knew we wanted the details of our wedding to be non-traditional and whimsical. We asked Cleveland designer Brian Jasinski of Grey Cardigan to create our Save the Date. Alysse used the Save the Date as inspiration for the design and feel of the wedding, incorporating the colors of the Save the Date into the wedding and suggesting non-traditional touches (such as the fruit and floral centerpieces and fruit as place cards). We were so pleased with the Save the Dates, we asked Brian to design the rest of the paper products, including the table numbers, fruit place card tags, patterned paper for the centerpieces and pinwheels, the fan-shaped programs and a custom designed wedding invitation, which included a rendition of a classic cruiser, a special gift that Jason had given me.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

I have two favorite things:

First, we chose a destination for our wedding that was very special to us — Savannah was the place where Jason and I went on our first trip together and it was also the place where Jason proposed to me a few years later. And because we chose Savannah for our destination wedding, most of our guests decided to make a long weekend trip out of it, which was wonderful because it felt like we were on vacation with all of our family and close friends, sharing with them “our” special city. In addition to the ceremony and reception, we planned several activities throughout the weekend (a trolley tour, lunch at Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room, a welcome dinner for all guests at Soho South Café and a Sunday morning brunch catered by Thrive) so we could spend time with everyone and they could experience the beautiful city. We also rented several houses, including 2 beautiful huge mansions so our wedding party could be together. The bridal party spent most evenings on the patio of the 109 West House relaxing –  it was so much fun!

The other thing that we loved about our wedding was that our ceremony took place in the band shell at Forsyth Park (the very place Jason had proposed to me just over a year before). That was very special for us. Moreover, because both the ceremony and the cocktail hour took place outdoors, we were able to incorporate into our wedding day much of the natural beauty that made us fall in love with the city of Savannah in the first place.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Try to spend as much time with your guests as you can the weekend of your wedding. It is the one time you will have all of your closest family and friends in one place, so enjoy yourself and make the most of it!

As for planning (and budgeting) advice, focus on (1) good food, (2) good music, and (3) being creative with the remaining details. Those are the three things which our guests have remembered and complimented us on the most.

I love Juliet’s advice! Creativity in wedding planning is definitely appreciated by your guests. While planning a seated dinner, the escort card is a must! Why not turn what could be a hum-drum detail into something charming for your guests? I love Juliet and Jason’s fruit escort cards; a whimsical detail their guests are sure to remember. Are you planning something fun for your escort or place cards? I’d love to hear!

XOXO,
Carlee

[Editor’s note: We’re back with another “Lessons Learned” post, and today my friend Christie of Mountainside Bride is sharing her wedding planning experiences with us!]

Lessons Learned: Hire The Best You Can Afford! via TheELD.com

I’m a big fan of looking back and finding valuable lessons to share. In fact, my blog used to be named the Hindsight Bride, and I still feature “Hindsight Interviews” along with my real weddings. So when Lauren asked me to share my Lessons Learned with y’all, I jumped at the opportunity. There were so many wedding lessons I learned and have been excited to share over the years. But here are a few bits of amazingness I want to share with you:

1. Hire for the very best photographer you can afford.

Forget the 10% wedding budget line item  rule. This is one of the most important wedding decisions you’ll make. Take it from someone whose wedding pictures were ruined. Long after your wedding day is over- and believe me, it goes by fast- the only thing you’ll have left to remember every beautiful moment is your wedding pictures. Hiring a great photographer will ensure that all of the most important moments, people, and details are preserved. A great photographer can also help you look and feel your best on your wedding day. He or she will compose images that show you in the most favorable way, and coach you so you get gorgeous portraits. Believe me- they will be totally worth every penny.

2. Focus on Guest Comfort.

I know it’s your day, but it’s also a big day for all of your guests. You could have assembled the most gorgeous and delightful details in the world for your wedding, but if you’re guests are roasting in the heat and humidity of your outdoor summer wedding in Florida, or are getting sunburned in the high altitude sun in Aspen they won’t remember (much less be delighted by) all of your lovely details. They will remember how uncomfortable they felt during your wedding. Talk to your planner about a Plan B for extreme weather, not just for rain or snow, but also dealing with extreme heat, cold or wind.

Similarly, if you have guests traveling from afar, make it easy on them. Book a block of rooms at a hotel so they can be near other guests. Offer them a little welcome bag that will introduce them to the area with maps and travel guides; will fill them in on wedding day or wedding weekend activities and schedules; and will offer a few local treats to delight them. Think of maple syrup for a Vermont wedding, or Ghirardelli chocolates for a San Francisco wedding. If you’re a mountain bride, be sure to list high altitude tips, such as staying hydrated and watching for signs of altitude sickness. If it seems overwhelming or you don’t know where to start, enlist your planner to help.

3. Hire a Planner!

This is especially important for destination brides, but I think every bride should have a wedding planner. I’ve heard horror stories about brides trying to coordinate wedding day logistics on their cell phone while getting their hair and makeup done. (Not awesome for getting ready picts.) I’ve also heard stories of the photographer or DJ playing ad hoc planner. Believe me, you want your amazing photographer focused on you and your wedding, not chasing down your sister to ask that she retrieve your forgotten wedding dress from your hotel room. And, you want your friends and family to be able to enjoy the day, not be accosted by vendors who need additional information or direction. All that attention you put into hiring the perfect photographer an considering your guests’ comfort will be for nought if your wedding devolved into chaos because you skipped the wedding planner. Oh, and the event coordinator IS NOT a wedding planner. Hire a wedding planner :-)

From the bride, Katie:

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

Etsy!! God, I love Etsy!! I wanted a wedding that was totally personal and unique. I wanted to get away from the cookie cutter look. I found so many great things on Etsy. My bridesmaid dresses were custom made by a lady on there. My save the date cards and wedding invitations were from two different women on there. Also, my favors, which were cupcakes in cute decorated jars was from a wonderful baker on there. Plus, so many other little odds and ends. I loved having one of a kind items. It made me feel very special to know that all those items were created just for me!! Apart from Etsy, my wedding coordinator at Bare Ranch, my friends and mom all helped me out tremendously!!

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

The most important thing to me when deciding where to get married was the level of involvement I could have in planning it. The city I live in, Lodi, CA, is famous for being a wine town and there are many great wineries to get married at. My husband and I checked out many of them, but there was very little room to get creative and have a wedding that I could truly make my own. Many of them were strict with what you could bring in, and for some of the outrageous prices that the wineries charge around here, I thought that was just a rotten deal. I knew I wanted an outside wedding, both the ceremony and reception. I was looking for a beautiful place that was outside, where I would be allowed to decorate how I wanted to. And then… I visited Bare Ranch. Right away I was struck by how beautiful it was. After talking to the event coordinator, Lori, I just thought, this is it. Not only were they reasonably priced, but I was given so much help by Lori. Plus, I was able to bring in anything I wanted for my big day. I got to be in charge of where things went and how things looked and all that awesome stuff. It was a big undertaking, because I know many brides that prefer to have a venue take care of all those things for you. Not me though- I wanted it to be how I envisioned it, not some other people who dont know me. As far as my other vendors, my caterer and DJ were recommended by Bare Ranch and they are both known in the area for being quite good, so I did not hesitate to go with them. I found some of my vendors online. I saw work by my photographer and videographer online and knew that they were the ones for me. The quality of their work was amazing. Really, when it came to deciding who to work with, I took a chance and picked some people who I had never heard of, and it certainly paid off in the end. I just kinda went with my heart :)

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

As for my inspiration, I have always been a fan of the shabby chic and vintage look. I tried to put a little bit of both in my wedding. Luckily, my mother owns two shabby chic/vintage stores, so I was able to get many of my pieces from there. I wanted the colors to be light, and even though our wedding was in the fall, we were having an outdoor wedding, so it worked. I love white and soft blues and greens and pinks. I didnt want my weddings to revolve around certain colors- I just thought that was too restricting. I think that by going with a theme, you have way more options because then you can use all the colors that fit it!

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

I loved every minute of it! I think my most favorite memory though is getting dressed and realizing that I had left my shoes at home, which meant that I had none to wear for the wedding. My wonderful maid of honor gave me her shoes her and the rest of my bridesmaids all went barefoot! I don’t know if it was because it was an outside wedding and the bridesmaid dresses were vintage-y looking, but it totally worked and came out looking cute!!

Colorful Rustic Eclectic California Wedding via TheELD.comColorful Rustic Eclectic California Wedding via TheELD.com

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

My best piece of advice is dont rush the planning of your wedding. Many brides want to get married quickly, so they give themselves 6 months or so to plan their wedding. Don’t do it!! My husband and I were engaged for a year and a half, so I had 18 months to plan everything. It worked out great, because then I could take my time picking out vendors who were right for me. Rushing is no fun, especially because many good (and inexpensive) vendors get booked early on. Give yourself enough time! Also, many brides are looking for that DIY look and I was no exception. However, many women either do not have the time to make all the stuff themselves or are like me and lack the crafting know how. Etsy is a wonderful site where you can still get all of those unique handmade items, and thats an awesome thing for busy brides! Many Etsy shops are inexpensive and almost all the wedding items can be custom made to fit your theme and color. Plus, they make it super easy to order!

How great are the colors in this wedding? And I love all of Katie’s advice- it’s so helpful!

Are any of you planning on using Etsy for some of your wedding details like Katie did? What will you be getting?
