What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

When looking for vendors we took a lot of personal recommendations from friends. We trusted that someone else had a good experience and it really worked out in our favor! We loved so many of our vendors and would recommend them to others. Price was our other determining factor. Everything in the wedding world is so expensive we made sure to save where we could.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

I’ve always loved the traditions and style of the south so I wanted to make our wedding feel like a classy, preppy, traditional wedding with southern charm.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

This question is tough because it was such an amazing day!  My husband and I have agreed that the best thing about the wedding was looking around the room at our reception and seeing all of our loved ones in one place, supporting our marriage.  If I had to pick a tangible item, it would be a toss up between my dress, which I wanted to wear for as long as possible, and my bouquet which had my Grandma’s earrings attached to the stem. Although she has passed, I could feel her earrings under my fingers during the ceremony and I knew she was with us in spirit. That was very special.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

My advice for other brides is to remember that the most important thing is that you are committing yourself to the person you love on that day. It’s easy to get caught up in worrying about table numbers, favors, shoes, etc. but at the end of the day, no one will remember those things. Pick something you like and can afford and move on. My Dad kept telling me, “don’t sweat the small stuff – and it’s all small stuff.”

How gorgeous was that?! And I love that the advice she is passing on to all you brides is something her dad reminded her of throughout the wedding planning process!

Do you have someone giving you good advice for your wedding day? And how do you plan not to “sweat the small stuff”?
Can’t wait to hear!

Cheers,
Samm

Insight from Brandy:

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

I actually did a lot of the planning myself. I had a very specific vision in mind and luckily the skills and passion for the job – I’ve always been the organized and creative type, so wedding planning was right up my alley. Plus, I was in graduate school during our engagement; thus I gladly took up any opportunity to distract myself from classes and switch from researching theories to researching vendors as well as switching from accumulating clinical hours to accumulating pretty pictures. Nevertheless, with weddings being the intricate events that they are, it all would not have been possible or as successful without some help from a few very special people. My parents and fiancé were my support throughout the planning process. They were there for me to bounce off ideas with, to accompany me in numerous outings for décor items and vendor meetings, to help me complete DIY projects, and to vent to when experiencing wedding woes. My coordinator, Emily (of Emily Grace Designs), was also a great help. She was hired as more of a “day-of coordinator” to help set up and run things on the big day. However, in addition to doing an incredible job of decorating the reception venue, she also met with me a few times before the wedding for brainstorming sessions, answered any questions I had via e-mails and texts, and assisted me in designing some pieces for my wedding (including my invites). And I can’t forget the countless hours I spent online looking at sites like Etsy, Pinterest, and blogs such as ELD, which really helped inspire many of my final ideas.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

I was very particular when selecting my vendors and venues. I always met with more than one person for each thing to make sure I was picking the right person for our wedding. In addition to a lot of experience, a good reputation, and a decent price, it was also very important for me to find someone who could really understand my vision and help make my dreams a reality. Therefore, when meeting with people, I looked for those that I clicked with personality-wise, would feel comfortable around on the big day, and who demonstrated an enthusiasm for their job and an openness to do things differently. I did not want the traditional formal wedding, so I needed people who were up for some fun and a little “outside of the box” thinking.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

For our wedding, I really wanted it to represent us as a couple (both of us as much as possible, not just me with a majority of feminine details). So, we actually started off with a romantic rustic theme to have some masculine feel to it as well. However, over time it evolved into a vintage eclectic theme, which allowed us to better represent each one of us – with some rustic pieces still in the mix. In addition to that theme, we also wanted the overall feel to be fun, like a true celebration, as well as intimate. So, it was a colorful wedding with just our closest friends and family and many personal touches – including our vows, favors, selected food options, and décor items.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

It seems impossible to pick just one favorite thing. If speaking generally, I would say how fun and personal it was. After more than two years of planning (yes, two – I was in graduate school and my fiancé worked in a different city), it was nice to relax and just enjoy the moment. More specifically, I liked our ceremony because it really honored the serious commitment we were making to each other and it represented us as a couple very well. Our reverend really got to know us and spoke of things important to us, plus we wrote our own vows, did a first look with just the two of us (and our photographers and videographers, haha), and it all took place in a church that was not only beautiful but also held the same values we do. As for the reception, the atmosphere was perfect with the venue, décor, music, food and company. I remember walking in before everyone else and my jaw dropped to the floor and pretty much stayed there unless I was saying “oh my gosh”, which I did a lot. Everything just came together so nicely and it was wonderful to see all the hard work and attention to detail finally pay off. It felt like two wonderful worlds had collided – my home world and my dream world: it was at a farmers market we often attended together and with friends and family, but now it was filled with all our loved ones and just about every color under the sun. Not to mention, there was a dessert table that seemed like something out of a fantasy, a photo booth that resulted in hilarious pictures, and a dance floor that was never empty. Oh, and I can’t forget the parade we had from the church to the reception location – it was so much fun marching down the brick roads of Winter Park with all our guests as others watched and honked their horns to cheer us on.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

As everyone knows, planning a wedding can be very stressful and exhausting with all the details involved. So, I would say make a conscious effort on a regular basis to have fun and enjoy the experiences – unfortunately, cake tastings do not happen often in life, so make the most of it! Also, be true to yourself and your fiancé by planning a day that captures your style as a couple. It took a while for my own parents to come around to the idea of a not-so-traditional wedding with a reception in a venue that looked like a barn, suits instead of tuxedos on the guys, and flats on my feet rather than heels. But in the end they had no reservations and absolutely loved it – as did my fiancé and I.

I love Brandy’s getaway dress she changed into! And how fun was that parade after the ceremony, led by the bride and groom?! Such a great way to involve your guests!

So tell me- are any of you planning on incorporating fun elements in your own wedding like Brandy and Scott did? What will you be doing?

[Editor’s note: Happy Tuesday friends! I’m excited to welcome back Joelle of A Charming Occasion to ELD as a Tips Contributor! Joelle has some amazing insight to share with us, and I can’t wait for you all to learn more from her!]

There are so many posts out there on how to find your wedding vendors (and here’s to hoping that you’re actually using professional wedding vendors), but what about how to work with them? It wasn’t too long ago that I myself was a bride, working with my own wedding vendors. Now I’m on the flip side, and I’ve gained some insight about working with and trusting your vendors that will be helpful to know.

Trust The Wedding Vendors You Hire! via TheELD.com

I think one of the most common arguments against hiring a wedding planner (which is what I am) is that people like to be in control. They like to be in control of the decisions and the outcome (but only if it’s good, of course). It’s also the most common misconception about hiring a wedding planner.

Any good planner or coordinator (I tend to use the words interchangeably) will tell you that their role isn’t to take that control away from you. A good planner will want to work with you, not against you. You are their client, and they want to make sure that they are there for you, so that you can have the most amazing wedding possible; the wedding you’ve always dreamed of. You make the important decisions, and they help stitch it all together.

When you start looking for your vendors, you want to make sure that you can trust them. Expertise and experience are important, of course, but do you have that “gut feeling” that they are right for you? The relationship between wedding planner and client is extremely intimate and personal. We know your relationship with your fiance (the real one, not the one you put on Facebook or try to convince everyone you have).  We know your finances, since it is up to us to manage your budget. And eventually we will know your likes and dislikes, your pet peeves and the things that make you tick. When we plan your wedding, we use these things to create something unique and special- something custom made just for the two of you.

Like any good relationship, your relationship with your wedding planner, or any wedding vendor, is based on trust. You need to trust them, that they understand your vision and will be able to bring it to life- even if you can’t convey what exactly your vision is in words. You need to trust that they are on your side, and that they are doing what is best for you. Wedding planning is a crazy ride, full of passion and impulsive decision making. They are your voice of reason, and your common sense when your mind is overwhelmed with wedding colors and details and choices. And you need to trust that they know what they are doing. If you can’t trust them, your wedding is not going to be filled with happiness and love. It’ll be filled with stress and anxiety, and even anger if something goes wrong and you blame them for it.

I recently went to a marketing workshop for vendors, and one of the speakers kept talking about how we need to market ourselves as useful to our clients, because we really don’t have anything special to offer. Anything we do, according to this speaker, can be done exactly the same by someone else. I remember shaking my head at this, because it just simply isn’t true. Not in this industry, at least.

What planners offer to couples is themselves. We offer our personalities, our quirks and our talents and our weaknesses, so that they can be used in the best way possible. You can’t just pull a wedding out of a box. (Well, you can, but that’s not what I’m about.) I’m about meshing my personality and my experience with the personality and experience of my couples, so that we can make something amazing together. And hopefully, that something amazing will be the wedding of their dreams!
