How To Be Comfortable In Front Of The Camera

By: Rachael Osborn Photography

If posing for the camera sounds about as comfortable to you as a trip to the dentist, you’re not alone. It’s safe to say that most of us – yes, even photographers – feel awkward when we’re in front of the lens (hey, I would much rather take your photo than have mine taken any day). However, after spending quite a bit of time both in back of the camera and in front, I’ve learned a few tips and tricks that make a world of difference in how comfortable you’ll feel striking a pose – and what better time to put them into effect than your wedding day?

A Winter Wedding Look + How To Be Comfortable In Front Of The Camera via TheELD.com A Winter Wedding Look + How To Be Comfortable In Front Of The Camera via TheELD.com A Winter Wedding Look + How To Be Comfortable In Front Of The Camera via TheELD.com A Winter Wedding Look + How To Be Comfortable In Front Of The Camera via TheELD.com

1) Hire a photographer you trust…and mesh with.

This might sound like a no-brainer, but it’s so vital to being comfortable in front of the camera. Look through their portfolio – do their couples look at ease? natural? happy? or are they stiff? Then – and I think this is so important – meet with your photographer in person and see if you click. Think about it – you’re going to be spending one of the most important days of your life with them; you want to make sure they’re someone you want to hang out with. A great photographer will do their best to make you feel at ease – like you’ve met an old friend again instead of just having a business transaction.

2) Do an engagement shoot….with that photographer.

I offer a complimentary engagement shoot to all my couples for this reason. I want to have chance to interact with them in front of my camera prior to the wedding day. It’s great chance to get comfortable being together in front of the camera – you’ll see how your photographer works, get used to their posing and directions, and when you get those images back, you’ll have a good idea about what “works” for you and your spouse-to-be in front of the camera. Bonus points for turning the engagement shoot into a makeup and hair trial run – you’ll get an extra confidence boost knowing you’ve nailed your wedding day look in advance.

3) Practice posing in front of a mirror

I know, I know…it feels awkward. Whatever, it works – and you’ll become more familiar with your own body language, movement, and facial expressions. Having that knowledge in advance will equal confidence because you’ll know what looks good – and feels natural – for you.

4) Pay attention to posture

The spine is the basis to every good pose. Literally – it’s the backbone (haha) of a good shot in terms of posing. You want your spine to be straight, but you don’t want to look stiff or unnatural. I tell clients to image that there is a string at the back of their heads gently pulling their spinal cord and neck toward the sky, then gently ease their shoulders back to open the chest area toward the camera. This posture looks relaxed, open, elegant, and natural.

5) Don’t forget about your eyes.

You know that whole “the eyes are the windows to the soul thing”? It’s true. Try to keep your mind actively engaged while posing. If it means counting the bricks on a wall opposite of you, do it – but it’s even better if you can focus on the emotions you’re trying to draw out for the camera.

6) Laugh to smile

Sometimes, when we’re in front of a camera, it’s really hard to smile naturally on demand (I have this problem). So, I tell clients to laugh. Or I do my best to make them laugh. Chances are, a real, genuine smile will follow. Perfection.

7) Bend and cross.

There’s an old rule for posing that says “if it bends, bend it” in terms of limbs. Natural, gentle bends in your limbs can be very flattering (especially on us girls), and the same goes for your legs when standing – simply crossing one leg in front of the other gives a flattering curve to body. Guys, you can leave those legs a shoulder width apart and bend your feet slighting outward so your toes are facing away from each other. A relaxed bend at the elbow and hands tucked into pockets looks comfortable and masculine.

8) Have fun & be yourself.

It sounds so simple, but just letting yourself relax, be in the moment, and enjoy what’s happening. Don’t stress over how the final shot will turn out – believe me, your photographer does enough of that for the both of you. Let the professional work their magic – remember, you hired them for a reason (you loved their work!) – now let them do their thing & trust their vision while you have fun making memories you’ll cherish for years to come.

Now that you have these tips, do you think you’ll be more comfortable in front of the camera? Do any of you already have any experience in front of the camera and have any tips to add?

From Let’s Frolic Together…

Chris and Michelle are such genuine shining stars. They are two creative talents working in the industry, and full of such silly energy. I love these two—they way they love each other with excitement and high fives and giggles and hope. Their day started out getting ready at the snazzy W Hotel and led to the gorgeous succulent-filled magical venue that is SmogShoppe. Blushes and sparkles and tattoos and street taco carts… yup, this wedding was magic. I love that they eschewed some traditions they weren’t vibing with (no wedding party) but hung onto some tender ones that they did (the chuppah made from her grandmother’s lace). I love that they ended their vows with “thank you for marrying me.” I love that they both cried somethin’ fierce when they saw each other. I love that they had a tattoo shop at their wedding (don’t worry moms, they were temporary). I love that laughing while working it on the dance floor was just par for the course. I love that their incredible appreciation for the people they love and the support they provide is so obviously mutual. From her grandmother’s vintage bracelet to his grandfather’s tie pin. From her BHLDN dress to his amazing tattoos. A magical, dreamy, urban garden day!

This is most certainly one of the coolest weddings I’ve seen yet! I don’t know about you, but I definitely wish I had been a guest at this amazing Smog Shoppe wedding!

I love that Chris and Michelle chose to not partake in some of the typical wedding traditions. Are you doing anything to forego some traditions for your own wedding? I’d love to hear what you’re doing- or rather, not doing!

This lovely garden wedding took place in North Carolina and is filled with vintage details, gorgeous flowers, and a soft, romantic color palette. Soft pink florals and pale blue accents created a look that is absolutely stunning, and Faith Teasley captured it all perfectly! The gorgeous bride, Ashley, is here with us today sharing her wedding planning insights:

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

I could not have planned my wedding without my mom.  Although we were miles apart, she was always sending me emails and pictures non-stop (all without a smart phone too!)

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

I was really looking for people who were nice and courteous; people who were willing to be very flexible with scheduling and open to suggestions.  Faith was all of these and more!

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

My inspiration was for more of a vintage, elegant, romantic wedding.  I read a lot of historical novels and collect antique postcards (which is why they were on the tabletops!  Yes, even my husband, Jamey helps me look for those postcards) and I was inspired by the timelessness of everything.  I wanted the focus to be on family and close friends, so a smaller, intimate wedding where everyone would be able to talk to each other and have a good time was very important to me.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

I have too many favorite things to list just one!  Everything came together and getting to see Jamey waiting for me at the end of our “aisle” was something very special.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

My best piece of advice is to be true to your ideas and vision.  Don’t try to do what is popular or “in” at the time; do what is important to you and your special someone, because that’s what the day is truly celebrating!

Excellent advice from Ashley! It’s important to keep in mind what you want for your wedding and not get caught up in trends and what you think you “should” have. Having a wedding that is what YOU want is so important!

I love how Ashley chose to have a vintage style for her garden wedding. Are any of you going to be incorporating vintage elements or style into your own wedding?

The start of engagement season has officially arrived, and we’re already thinking slightly ahead toward celebrating an engagement… more specifically, how to plan an engagement party! I don’t know about you, but I will take any excuse to host or attend a party, and celebrating a newly engaged couple is at the top of my list (perhaps just behind attending a wedding)! However, before the joy of the actual party is the planning process, and for the host, this can spell overwhelm very quickly. To save you from panicked moments, we’re breaking down the engagement party planning process into actionable (and achievable) steps and know-how. So without further ado, here are our 10 steps for how to plan an engagement party:

How To Plan An Engagement Party via TheELD.com

1. Who’s Hosting:

Most often, the bride’s family will host the couple’s engagement party. However, if the groom’s family wants to join in, that’s perfectly acceptable! It’s also very possible that close friends will want to throw a party, too.

2. Is it a surprise?:

For the most part, engagement parties are typically not surprises. Because this is the first event surrounding the wedding, it’s a bit easier for the bride and groom to be in the know because they can offer tips and suggestions for the guest list and party’s style.

3. Choose a Date:

We’ve talked about when to host your engagement party before, but a quick summary: plan a date about a year before the wedding. Try to avoid holidays and birthdays in order for the engagement party date to truly shine on it’s own. Another tip: April-June and September-early November are the most popular times for weddings. Avoiding dates during wedding season may help you to have a higher guest count at the engagement party.

4. Create a Guest List:

Similar to a wedding, an engagement party can be as intimate or as large as you like. Collaborate with the bride, groom, and the groom’s parents for the guest list. Sticking to family and the closest of friends is usually the way to go because you’ll also want to invite this group to the wedding. Also, keep your budget in mind: guests are the most expensive part of any party’s equation because your count determines your venue’s required size and catering costs.

5. Choose a Venue:

Your venue does not have to match the wedding’s style. In fact, an engagement party is a great time to plan something completely different! Think about casual venues, like restaurants or backyards, or more trendy places, like a rooftop! Wineries, country clubs, and museums make great engagement party venues, too.

6. Hire Professionals:

Unlike a wedding when you will want (and need!) a complete vendor team, an engagement party will involve a small pool of pros. You’ll definitely want to hire a photographer, caterer, florist, and venue (if you’re planning a party that’s not at your home). But the decision to hire additional vendors, like a wedding planner, band or DJ, or videographer is completely up to you and the party you have in mind. A quick tip: an engagement party is more low key than a wedding and usually much more about mingling.

7. Create a Registry:

Sometimes this tip is voted as “most surprising”, but from the moment they get engaged, family and friends will want to present the bride-and-groom-to-be with a gift. If the couple is open minded about receiving a piece that might hold more value to the receiver than the recipient, skip registering. However, if the couple has a few needs and wants in mind, encourage them to create a registry they can continue to build upon for their wedding day. Make sure to note the registry on the invitations!

8. Send Your Invitations:

Plan to send your invitations about six weeks before the engagement party. This will ensure that guests traveling in will be able to make their travel arrangements, plus it allows everyone to have enough time to consult with their calendars and RSVP. Also, we still believe in sending invitations through the mail. Receiving an actual invite, rather than an email or a phone call, is still much more personal.

9. Confirm…Everything:

Two weeks prior to the engagement party, you will want to confirm your guest count. Your venue will ask for the final number of guests attending so they can create their final catering order forms. Also, plan to confirm your order with your florist and circle back with your photographer to make sure everyone is still onboard with the date, time, and plan as a whole.

10. Enjoy Your Soiree!

We cannot stress this enough, but our best advice for enjoying any party is to place your complete trust in your vendor team (and yourself!). You’ve planned a wonderful party that you should enjoy, and your vendors are well equipped to do their jobs well. Relax, have fun, and soak up the couple you’re celebrating!
