Hi, my name is Lauren, and I hired a cheap wedding photographer… and I’m here to prevent you from doing the same!

I Hired A Cheap Wedding Photographer via TheELD.com

I’m sure you’ve noticed that I’m always talking about the importance of quality photography. Well, one of the major reasons for this is because I made a big mistake that I regret- and one that I hope to prevent other couples from making.

I hired a cheap wedding photographer.

The fact is, when I was planning my wedding, I had no clue about anything. I didn’t know what to expect costs to be, what to look for, or how to even know figure out what I liked. The only resources I used were large, popular wedding sites because that’s all I knew about and quite frankly, all that I could find back then. When I used the budget recommendations of these sites and magazines, the recommended photography percentage was way below what I was realistically seeing for photographer pricing. I didn’t have anyone to tell me what the “normal” pricing was for a good photographer, or even how to know what would be considered “good”. I was counting on the resources I used to help me, and they sadly didn’t. To make a long story short, this is one of the reasons why I set out to provide realistic information to brides about weddings, and so here I am today! (Note: go here to find out what to expect wedding professionals to cost!)

I’m certainly in no way a photographer, but since I don’t want you to make the same mistake that I did, I thought it would be helpful to pass along some tidbits that I wish I had known when it came to wedding photographers…

Cost Expectation

One of the first things that would be crucial to know is the normal cost for decent photography, because I myself had no idea. According to my survey of wedding professionals, you can expect to see pricing around $3500 for a professional photographer. This of course will vary depending on location, as well as with the photographers and their experience.

Pay Attention To Quality

Oh my goodness- I definitely wish I had known more about what to look for when it came to quality! I met with 4 photographers, but I got so fixated on price that I forgot to also look at quality. It can be quite difficult to compare just based on price, because often times photographers’ pricing structures are different- not to mention that their experience and quality is going to be different too! So please, I beg of you- pay more attention to the quality than to the cost!

It’s Not Just A Day’s Work

Keep in mind that photographers are not just taking photos of you for 8 hours on your wedding day. They also have to edit the photos (which can take up to 30 hours), design the album, answer your emails and phone calls, and carry out all of the other administrative duties that owning a business entails. (There is so much more, but I’ll leave that to the photographers to explain!) Sure, it’s easy to say that a photographer is making $3500 for a day’s work, but all of the work done before and after the wedding ends up being way more than just one day.

[Note: Don’t get me wrong when I say “cheap photographer”. I paid more than what would normally be considered “cheap”- it kills me knowing what I paid, and now knowing what I could have had for that same amount. But when you consider what was included in the price (my 12 hour wedding day, engagement session, bridal session, album and prints), and then see the pretty much unedited images, then yes, it was indeed “cheap”.]

Needless to say, I’m still pretty heartbroken about my lack of knowledge when it came to choosing my photographer. Now that I look at amazing work from photographers every day, I know that my photos could have been so much better. But you live and you learn, right?

Bottom line: you get what you pay for.

If you have any questions about choosing your photographer, please ask! I don’t want anyone else to experience this regret, and this is one of the many reasons why I write this blog and why I entered the wedding industry. I want to help everyone have the absolute best wedding possible, and I believe that knowledge is the key to that!

Elegant and classic, this Illinois wedding is filled with inspiration and joy. A color palette boasting bold shades of navy and red makes the decor and design pop, which we of course love. The bride, Amy, was the embodiment of classic, timeless elegance in her sweetheart gown with a lace bolero overlay. Bridesmaids wore dresses in the most beautiful shade of navy, and their bouquets with pops of red were the perfect complement. Amy and Rich’s reception vision was brought to life at Royal Fox Country Club, made complete with gold chiavari chairs, gold sequin table runners, and colorful florals. We can’t wait for to see all of the beauty that Nicole Jansma Photography captured!

Wedding invitations are one of my absolute favorite wedding details, and if you ask me, I think they might be the most important wedding detail too! Not only do they serve the very important purpose of informing your guests, but they (and your Save The Date if you send them) are the very first thing that people will see when it comes to your wedding, and therefore set the tone for many other aspects of your wedding.

With that said, let’s go over a few things that would be helpful for you to know and remember when it comes to wedding invitations…

7 Things You Need To Know About Wedding Invitations via TheELD.com

Custom is the way to go…

Custom invitations are the way to go- and NO, they’re NOT as expensive as you think! I think that just because the word “custom” is associated with it, many people automatically think something is out of their price range- I know I did! (Sidenote: essentially everything for your wedding IS custom, because your wedding should be CUSTOM to YOU!) Think of it this way- would you rather have your wedding invitation be something mass produced that a million other brides have used for their own weddings? Or would you rather have something designed to match your wedding with all of your preferences, information, and requirements? I myself didn’t even know I could have custom wedding invitations, and it’s one of my major wedding regrets. There are SO many amazing designers out there, and I know you will find someone who is perfect for you!

Design Takes Time…

With that said, you need time to have your invitations designed. It will be a process that you will go through with your stationery designer, you will have to make edits, changes, tweaks, etc. Start this design process 6 months before your wedding. (Oh, and while we’re on the topic of designing invitations… don’t ever expect a designer to replicate someone else’s design. Show them your inspiration for the style and look of what you like, and then they can create something custom for you from your inspiration. Don’t ask them to copy someone else’s work- it’s illegal!)

Inform…

Your wedding invitations are meant to inform your guests, so you of course want to make sure you’re doing just that! Include you and your partner’s names, the host names (if applicable), the location, and recommended attire. You can include the address if you wish, but if you’re having a directions card, then it’s not necessary.

On that note, it’s always a good idea to include an information card (sometimes called a directions and/or accommodations card) in your invitation. This will do the job of providing your guests with even more information than the actual could provide. And definitely include your wedding website too!

Proofread…

You don’t know how many times I’ve heard about invitations being printed wrong because of a lack of proofreading! Your stationer most likely doesn’t know the exact spelling of your fiance’s name, your parents’ names, your venue’s name, etc- but you do! Make sure you look over the proofs sent to you, and then have at least 2 other people look them over as well!

How Many To Order…

Remember that you don’t have to order one invitation for EVERY person on your guest list. Many of the people you invite will be couples, and I’m pretty sure most of those people live at the same address, right? So when thinking of how many invitations to order, just cut your number of guests in half and you’ll have a good estimate. Of course you definitely want to make sure to do a final count, and always order extra invitations just in case! Also, if you have divided your guest list into an A and B list, make sure you have enough additional invitations to send to some of the B list if you have A list guests RSVP with a “no”!

When To Send…

Your wedding invitations should be sent out 8 to 10 weeks prior to your wedding day. If your wedding is taking place around a holiday or during a busy time of year, definitely send 10 weeks before. If you have sent out a Save The Date, you will be “safe” to send in the normal 8 week window.

Don’t forget…

Don’t forget about postage and other paper elements too! The majority of the time an invitation is NOT going to just take a normal stamp, so you’re going to need to take it to the post office and have it weighed before you buy your stamps. And you’ll need stamps for your RSVPs too- don’t forget those!

Read more here: HOW TO MAIL WEDDING INVITATIONS

As for the other paper elements, people always think about them, but they’re often forgotten in the excitement of the invitation design. These items are also very important in information your guests, but just on your wedding day- menus, escort cards, programs, etc. Even though they’re not needed until the day of your wedding, I definitely recommend having your stationer design these items along with your invitations so they’re ready to go once you have all of the details to “fill in”.

All of this information is important to know no matter where you are in your planning, but of course it’s key to remember 6 months before your wedding, because then it’s time to start on your wedding invitations!

So do you have any questions about wedding invitations that I or stationery pros can answer for you? Have any of you started on your wedding invitations yet?
