[Editor’s note: Happy Tuesday everyone! We’re starting off this wonderful day with Joelle’s very first Tips post! So sit back, grab your coffee (or tea or energy drink, etc) and do a little reading up on the pros and cons of DIY! And of course be sure to show Joelle some love! :)]

Browse Pinterest for five minutes, and you’ll see what’s popular in weddings these days. It’s no surprise that with the economy the way that it is, DIY (or do-it-yourself) weddings are all kinds of popular right now. Whether it’s sewing your own table runners, shopping the flea market for details, or even making your own bouquets, projects that you do yourself are a great way to save money and add a personal touch to your wedding day. But (and there’s always a but), there are a few downsides to doing it this way as well… so here are the pros and cons of DIY!

Tuesday Tips: The Pros and Cons of DIY via TheELD.com

 1. In some ways, creating things yourself can be a huge money saver, but it can come at the cost of your time. Be prepared to spend quite a bit more time on the details than other brides and grooms if you decide to do things yourself. But, if saving money is more important to you than saving time, then more power to you! Just be sure to shop around to find the best price for things. You might be surprised at how expensive supplies can cost. So, shop wholesale and local when you can.

2. Obviously, your bridesmaids will know when you ask them to be in your wedding that there are a few things that are expected of them. Throwing you a shower and helping you get into your dress are just two of many obligations that bridesmaids often expect of themselves (without even pressure on the part of the bride, in many instances). But helping you make one thousand paper flowers shouldn’t be included in that list of obligations. When deciding what DIY details you want at your wedding, it’s perfectly alright to ask your girls for help, but definitely don’t expect it. They may not have the time or skills to sew their own dresses either.

3. Please, take into consideration your own skill set. A lot of things look like they are the easiest thing in the world to create, but can actually be really difficult. Don’t beat yourself up if something you found online doesn’t actually turn out the way you want it to. In cases like these, you have a lot of options: just keep practicing, scrap it and try something new, or buy DIY. That last one might sound a little strange, but that’s exactly what buying on Etsy is!

4. Not everything about DIY is bad, however. The best part is that by making things yourself, you’re automatically inserting you into your wedding! Not only are you adding things that you love into your wedding, but you are adding a handmade touch. It may seem like this is the norm in weddings these days, but I can guarantee that it isn’t. Very few weddings actually include handmade details, and it’s really a breath of fresh air when you see it done right.

5. Regardless of what you do, just make sure that you have a positive experience while you do it. I guarantee that things will become more stressful as your wedding gets closer, but in the days leading up to it, you won’t care. So, if three months out you decide that you want to start collecting mason jars for your flowers, do it! Have fun hunting for those things. But don’t wait until the last minute, or else you’ll stress yourself out and it won’t get done. Wedding planning should be a fun, positive experience, and doing things yourself can just add to the experience. But be sure to let it all go if you need to. You really don’t want to dread your wedding day because you couldn’t get those things done that you had wanted to get done.

6. If a large portion of your wedding is DIY, I would highly recommend that you hire a wedding planner. They will be able to see your vision the way that you see it, and implement that on your wedding day. I know that it’s been said here a few times before, but I’ll say it again. A wedding planner really can be a lifesaver on your wedding day. It may seem that when it comes to DIY, the work happens when you actually create the item, but that isn’t the case. You still need someone to put your handmade favors out, or set up that photo booth you created. I promise that you don’t want your mom or sister doing this, so make sure you designate someone who doesn’t have a pivotal role in the wedding itself to take care of these DIY details.

Having a wedding made up of little details that you and your fiance create together can really make for a truly special experience. Plus, no one will have the same wedding as you if you decide to DIY items! Just be prepared to spend time on these things, and to give it up if you really need to you. The most important thing is that you’re happy on your wedding day- and you don’t want the fact that you couldn’t create that perfect tissue pom backdrop to ruin it all.

Brides, what have you decided to DIY for your wedding? Have you started yet, or perhaps nixed some of the things you were planning on doing? I know it happened to me plenty of times!

Good morning, y’all! {When you post about Texas weddings, you have to say y’all in the intro.} I have such a lovely treat from Nicole Chatham Photography to get our week started. This backyard wedding is colorful, fun, beautiful, and best of all, intimate. I’ve always been a fan of backyard weddings because of that simple fact: they’re personal. So take some time out of your Monday to sit back and enjoy Keith and Kristen’s big day.

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

My background of event planning, combined with my Mom’s creative vision and unconditional support, was most helpful in ensuring that the day was exactly as we wanted it. On my wedding day, I made sure that my Mom, wedding planner, and cousin knew exactly what I wanted and expected. This allowed me to let go and enjoy the day because I knew that there were multiple people checking on the vendors and set-up.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

We planned our wedding in four weeks, so I relied heavily on our wedding planner to propose vendors. With that being said, my Mom and I went over every detail and proposal to ensure it was the right fit for us. When it wasn’t, we spoke up and switched vendors when needed. We did not compromise on our vision because we were short on time. Wedding planners are fabulous, but I think it is extremely important to ensure you are getting what you want and expect from the vendors and not rely solely on your planner.

Did any of your vendors do anything special for you before, on, or after your wedding day that you would like to share?

I really loved the attitude of my catering manager and photographer. Both of them had a calm about them that made me very comfortable, they listened to what I wanted and proposed solutions and alternatives to make my vision better. If I had it to do over again, I would make sure that each vendor I hired made me feel like they did. Throughout the day, both of them were reassuring, and let me know what was going on and what to expect.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

My favorite thing about my wedding was the location. We were married at my parents’ ranch, and every time I go there, I think about our wedding.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Go into planning your wedding knowing what you want and stick to your vision and wishes!

I love how Kristen’s favorite part of her day was that it took place at her parents’ ranch so whenever she visits she can always remember her wedding. So special. Thanks for sharing with us, Kristen. And a big thank you to Nicole Chatham for passing along these beautiful photos to help brighten our Monday.

How much do you love Kristen’s dress… and the fact that the groom wore jeans? SO Texas, right? :) Have a great week, y’all!

You all may recall a certain modern, offbeat wedding that was featured here a week or so ago. (If you don’t, you have GOT to go see it!) Well, one of the awesome details at this wedding was a fabulous guest book alternative… guest blocks! Of course I couldn’t NOT include this idea as a Detail To Love, so here it is!

Detail To Love: Guest Blocks! via TheELD.comDetail To Love: Guest Blocks! via TheELD.comPhoto by Emily Takes Photos

That’s right. Different shaped blocks, in different colors, that your  guests can sign! What a fun way to have your guests write you notes of love and well wishes! And then after your wedding, you could put the blocks all together and display them, or just keep them in a vase or box and take them out to read them whenever you like!

So, what do you think of this guest book alternative? Have you figured out what you’re doing for your own “guest book” yet?

Editor’s Note: Happy Friday everyone! I am SO excited to introduce you to ELD’s newest contributor, Joelle! Joelle is the owner of A Charming Occasion based in California, and she’ll be gracing the pages of ELD once a week along with Brit and Kristine! Be sure to give her a warm welcome on her very first (and gorgeous I might add) post! :)

From the moment I saw the matching Converse shoes that the bride and groom wore for this pretty beach wedding, I was sold!  They flew all the way from Germany to get married on a beach in Florida, and I can’t imagine that their day could have been any more perfect. Everything was just beautiful, from the weather to the reception, the photography by Reign 7 Photography, and the bride too of course!

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

Definitely our wedding planner AJ Latteri and her whole team of AJ’s Island Network at The Loft 5, Anna Maria Island, FL. She has amazing ideas, a great eye for detail and an incredible network.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

With our wedding being a destination wedding, we  totally relied on Internet and email. With a view of  our wedding style in mind we pretty much narrowed it down to a few vendor options and finally chose the ones that we felt suited our style best. I instantly liked Reign7 Studio’s blog and wanted Toni & Lesley to do our pictures right from the beginning of our search. I am glad it worked out, we had lots of fun working with them and they did an amazing job! About the same with AJ, our wedding planner, whose vendors references on catering and flowers completed our vendor list.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

I used a raspberry colored ribbon and matching paper lanterns that I found a few months before the wedding as colour sample for the wedding decoration. To visualize the theme I collected pictures on the internet and finally put them together in a mood-board using addicting Pinterest and the knot.com.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

The location! Anna Maria Island, FL is a  perfect place for a wedding. Our ceremony was right  on the white sandy gulf beaches just steps away from the beach villa where we had our outdoor reception.

For our “first look” we chose the historic Anna Maria City Pier. Look out for our personalized pier plank, when you visit the island ;)

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Consider a (rather intimate) destination wedding. The pros far outweighed the cons for us .

I am seriously considering getting married all over again so that I can a gorgeous destination wedding like this one. And isn’t that last picture just incredible?! What an amazing, beautiful day!
