[Editor’s note: Hi friends! This post from Debbie is a little different from the usual “Tips” posts here on ELD, but it’s SO needed. Over the years, I’ve received countless emails from brides who are interested in working in the wedding industry. It’s not uncommon to plan your wedding and fall in love with the wedding industry- in fact, I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for getting into the industry after my own wedding planning experience! So if you’re considering working in the wedding industry, read on for some excellent tips!]

Thinking About Working In The Wedding Industry? via TheELD.com

After you get engaged and start the process of wedding planning, it’s like exploring a whole new world of beautiful things that you’ve never experienced before. Suddenly there are yummy cake tastings, delectable catering menus to sample, pretty linens to look at, gorgeous flowers to choose from, and so much more. Planning a wedding quickly seems like much more fun than working in a cubicle, right? It’s no wonder so many brides consider making a career change during the planning process!

It’s not uncommon to love planning your wedding so much that you think about making a career change to become a wedding planner (or a photographer or florist or stationery designer). The truth is, many people get started in the wedding industry following their own wedding (Including Lauren, the editor of ELD), and there’s nothing wrong with that. So if you are seriously considering making a career switch to work in the wedding industry, here are a few tried and true tips to help you decide if you should make the switch…

Breathe and give yourself some time.

Do not make any changes while you are planning your own wedding. Enjoy the planning process and have a lovely wedding day without the added stress of a possible career change. Relax on your honeymoon, put those wedding gifts away, write your thank-you cards and enjoy a few months of wedded bliss without the chaos and all-consuming wedding planning stress. Then revisit the idea of working in the wedding industry to see if you are still interested.

Get over the post-wedding blues.

There really is such thing as post-wedding blues and it happens to a surprising number of newly married couples. During the planning process, there are decisions to make, consultations to attend, wedding budgets to balance and so much more. It consumes a lot of free time for a year (or more) of your life! After the wedding, take up a new hobby, plan your next vacation together, and realize that it may take a few months to get over the post-wedding blues. Then, once the post-wedding blues have passed, spend some time thinking of whether you truly want to start a new career in the wedding industry.

Are you looking for a career change?

Do you like your current career?  Maybe you are looking for a creative outlet instead of a whole new career? Or maybe you really dislike your current job and wedding planning seems right up your alley. Ask your husband, friends and family if they think a career in wedding and event planning would be a good fit for you. They may not give you the answer you want to hear but it is always helpful to hear what they have to say even if you don’t take their advice.

Decide what you loved most about planning your wedding.

What was your favorite part of planning? Maybe you discovered a love of photography or a hidden DIY gene. Or maybe you loved pulling all the vendors together and creating your wedding day timeline. Or perhaps you loved the design aspect of using flowers, linens and lighting to create the perfect atmosphere. Maybe you just loved reading wedding blogs every day. Knowing what you loved most will help you hone in on what would be the best career move for you. A new career as a wedding planner or photographer may be perfect for you or you may decide that opening your own Etsy store or starting a personal blog would be more fitting.

Do some research on your potential new career.

Ask your wedding vendors what they really like and dislike about their career. Read about a day in the life of wedding planners to see what it is really like to work in the wedding industry.  Search online to see if there is a local introductory class in your town for the career change you are interested in.

There are many successful wedding professionals who realized their dream job after planning their own wedding. But there are others who changed careers, only later to realize that they didn’t spend enough time researching and had made a mistake. Give yourself time after the wedding to read, research and do some major thinking before making a decision about a career change into the wedding industry. It may be the perfect fit or it could just be a false start. Either way, think it through- and good luck!

Set among the turrets of the historical Old Red Courthouse in Dallas, this charming Texas wedding from Jeremy and Kristin is full of love. Bright and bold Texas wildflowers add a pop of color to the classic black and white color palette, and sweet personalized details add a fun element of surprise. The gorgeous bride, Stephanie, is here to give her planning insight:

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

As I’m sure most brides do, I had a lot of help in the planning process. Of course my mother (Gail Berlin) was a huge help, letting me bounce ideas off of her and figuring out how to bring them to life. A good friend of mine (who I happen to work with) was also getting married about a month after us, so we did a lot of planning together, sharing ideas, recommending vendors, etc. Probably the single most helpful thing that helped, however, was this HUGE wedding planning binder my mom picked up for me (The Bride’s Essential Wedding Planner Deluxe Edition). That thing had timelines, budgeting advice, prepared interview questions for vendors, worksheets to keep track of progress/interviews/budgets … oh man. That thing was a true lifesaver! And of course, my day of coordinator (April, with the Old Red Courthouse) helped me nail down my floor plan and timeline for the actual day, which was just a huge relief to not have to figure all that out by myself! Oh and I can’t forget my husband! He really was fantastic; sorting through wedding packets, narrowing down vendors for me, going to interviews, offering his input and ideas  and keeping me calm.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

I think the single most important thing I looked for in deciding who to work with was their ability to listen. If I gave them a budget, and they came back with a proposal that was three times what I told them I wanted to spend, how can I trust them to do what I ask on the wedding day? Similarly, if I came to them with a specific vision, and their proposal looks like we just never even spoke with one another, there’s that lack of trust. I got so lucky and found wonderful vendors who could bring my vision to life (and even bring in their own ideas that I would’ve never thought of!), and they’re just as happy with the final product as I was. That ability to listen and work together is essential to get everything just the way you want it and know it’s going to turn out just beautiful.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

Oh goodness, I’m not sure I can nail down my inspiration to just one thing. During the planning process I really felt like I was all over the place and I was just hoping everything would come together! I suppose I’d always had this idea for a classic black and white color palette. So I started with that. Then once we had our venue (The Old Red Courthouse in Dallas), a theme started to emerge. The courthouse is this wonderful old, red-brick, turreted building in the heart of downtown, so that, paired with the black and white palette, really started to feel very classic, vintage, Texas (but not rustic). That led to the idea of accenting the black and white with bright, beautiful Texas wildflowers. Once I had that idea, everything else just sort of flowed from there.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

My favorite thing, besides marrying my best friend, I assume? That is SO hard. I really did just love everything about my wedding, from the invitations and programs to the venue and decor to the catering and DJ. Everything was just perfect. If I had to pick just one thing, it’d probably have to be my venue, The Old Red Courthouse. We were married in one of the building’s many turrets, offering us a gorgeous view of the city where we met and live, which is exactly what we were looking for. After we got back from the honeymoon and had a chance to see other people’s photos from the wedding, we kept seeing so many pictures of our friends in front of any number of the fantastic views from all over the building and that’s when we realized that our friends and family loved that place as much as we did. It was special for everyone there.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Probably my number one piece of advice for brides is to trust in your vendors. These guys are professionals, know what they’re doing and know how to bring your vision to life. They know specifics, like which flowers will be in season on your wedding date, how to get people on the dance floor, the perfect lighting to get that phenomenal picture, etc., that chances are, you don’t know. It’s hard to sort of “let go” and let someone else just run with your ideas, thoughts, inspiration … but that’s why it’s so important to find those vendors you trust and work well with. It’s so worth it to put in the time to get to know them and feel comfortable with them, so you’re not a (more) nervous wreck on the actual wedding day! OH! And at the very least, get a day of coordinator. Worth. Every. Penny.

I love Stephanie’s advice to find vendors that you connect with on a personal level and trust them to make your big day super special. I also love that she recommended – at the very least – a day-of coordinator. While most planners’ “day-of” packages are more involved than just the day of the wedding, they can help keep you organized with minimal involvement. How about you? Are you hiring a planner, either full service or day-of? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Happy Planning!
Carlee

What is your favorite wedding detail you’ve ever seen or created?

I love surprises at a wedding! One of my favorites was a snowfall we created at a winter wonderland wedding during the couple’s first dance. Even the groom had no idea. It was magical!

What is your favorite store or brand?

What qualities do you possess that enable you to work well with brides and grooms?

One word: Calm! I am a very calm person and keep a level head in high pressure situations; that suits being a wedding planner very well. I always laugh that I used to own a yoga studio and that prepared me to work in this industry.

What steps do you take to ensure that your clients will have amazing wedding days when working with you?

I call myself a “boutique” wedding planner as I take under 20 weddings a year. Having a smaller clientele allows me to spend the time needed with each bride and give them all of the personal attention they deserve so we can really focus on the details.

I am loving the simple Southern elegance in today’s Tennessee wedding from Jen & Chris Creed. The bride and groom, Allie and Chris, wanted to keep things simple, elegant, and timeless, and lucky for us, it turned out beautiful! Get ready for some classic gorgeousness!

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

I’d have to say my mom. She knew the kind of wedding I’d always hoped for and envisioned, so I trusted her completely to help make decisions and take care of the little details every step of the way. Not sure what I would’ve done without her!

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

Well, we obviously had a budget, so honestly, cost was a big deciding factor. Fortunately, we were able to work with people who were really, really good at what they do, but didn’t charge us an arm and a leg to do it. Best of both worlds! We loved that most of the businesses we worked with from catering (Kathy’s Sugar and Spice) to flowers (Ruth’s Flowers) to the cake (Martha’s Cakes) to the decorating and staging (Holly Bieber and Kim Flatt) were small businesses and people with whom we already had a personal relationship. It was neat to have people who we already knew and trusted be part of the big day.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

I really just wanted classic, simple, elegant wedding. One that I wouldn’t look back on in 30 years and say “what was I thinking?!” So we stuck to traditional looks for the dress, tuxes, etc and simple Southern elegance in the decor.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Go with your gut. You’ve probably envisioned your wedding in your head for a long time, but when times come to actually plan it, it’s easy to second guess what you want and get overwhelmed with wanting to do every idea you see on Pinterest. Stay true to doing the things you’ve always wanted and don’t overthink it!

Now how absolutely lovely was that?! How are you making sure that you are staying true to your vision during your wedding planning?

Cheers!

Samm
