Today’s {Tuesday Tips} comes to us from Chris of ManRegistry.com and is another one for the guys in the wedding, but it can definitely apply to girls too! There are too many times when people botch their toasts at weddings- whether they say too much (including exes and drunken debacles) or not enough (going for the simple “Congratulations” and being done with it), everyone also wants some tips on their speech! I myself have yet to have to give a speech at a wedding, but I’m sure it’s bound to happen one day- and so, we have Chris to help everyone out!

Tips on Mastering the Best Man Speech

Homer Simpson once said…”If I could just say a few words…I’d be a much better public speaker.”

This quote often rings true – especially in the world of weddings. Many guys that have the honor of “Best Man” bestowed upon them are psyched for the experience minus one aspect – writing a toast. The simple truth, guys, is that it’s just not that hard. In fact, once you sit down to actually do the speech writing, you’ll discover just how easy and natural it comes.

Here are my top three suggestions for penning a speech that the bride and groom will remember (in a good way) forever.

Keep it clean

Unfortunately, Best Man speeches are synonymous with being inappropriate. Don’t get me wrong — dirty jokes, bad language and embarrassing stories certainly have a place in the wedding festivities. However, that place is the bachelor party.. Not the toast. When it comes to your speech, you must remember your audience. There are going to be older relatives and kids in attendance. This means keeping the speech clean. I’m not saying you can’t tell a funny story; just make sure it relates to the bride, the groom and their new marriage (in a positive light).

Honesty is the best policy

Speak from the heart. Share some favorite memories of the bride and groom. Let everyone know why they make the greatest couple in the world. Since you’re Best Man it’s probably a safe assumption that you’ve been close with the groom for a long time. This means you should have plenty of ammo to choose from.

(Note – you didn’t hear this from me, but if you can shed a tear, it significantly increases your chances of hooking up with a bridesmaid.)

Give props

It’s an honor to be Best Man in a wedding. At some point in your speech, you should definitely thank the bride and groom for inviting you to take part in their big day. It’s also a good idea to compliment the newlyweds and their families on the wedding. It’s not easy planning one of these things, and being told how good of a job they did just might just be the icing on their cake. Finally, thank everyone in attendance for being there. Some guests will have traveled long distances to attend this wedding. Acting as a representative of the groom, let these guests know how much their being present means.

Cheers!

Big big thank you to Chris for sending these tips over! I think speeches are something that people always try and avoid when they’re part of a wedding. Whenever I tell a best man or maid of honor they’re coming up, I give plenty of notice so they can mentally prepare and review.
