Hey friends! True story- these Tips posts take me FOREVER to write. Mostly because I prefer to put myself back in my “bride shoes” to think about what I had issues with when planning my wedding… and then I put on my “vendor hat” to add in the accurate tips and advice. (How’s that for accessory references? Even though I don’t really wear hats…) I have tons and tons of topics for Thursday Tips, but the thing is, I have to be FIRED UP about what I’m writing. Today, I’m more fired up about a wedding planning memory of mine rather than a specific topic. And so, I thought that maybe if I shared it with you all, I could possibly help someone!

Questions Are A Good Thing When Planning Your Wedding via TheELD.comPhoto by Pure Sugar Studios

Today, I keep going back to a specific day when I was planning my wedding. I remember it well. My husband and I had a long engagement- about 16 months. A lot can happen in 16 months. I was about half-way through my wedding planning, and yes, a lot had happened. I graduated college, and started a new job. I had grown apart from some friends, and grown closer to others. We were all busy, working, pursuing careers, living in new cities… yes indeed- a lot can happen in 16 months.

On top of all that, when I was in college, I was part of a sorority. Of course I knew I couldn’t invite everyone, but I wanted to know how other people had handled it. I had questions and I wanted answers. Since I was the first of all my friends to get married, I didn’t have anyone to turn to for advice. And so what did I do? I turned to the internet of course! Google is my friend- most of the time. ;) But I didn’t find anything by Googling- just like every other time I was searching for wedding planning advice. My next stop in my search for answers was a BIG website and their discussion boards. I scoured the boards, looking for some kind of answer, and still turned up empty-handed. And so, I took a deep breath, and posted something to the boards. It was short and simple, just stating that I had been in a sorority, I knew that I couldn’t invite everyone to my wedding, had anyone else been in this same situation, and did they have any advice.

Well, needless to say, I did NOT get the advice I was looking for. I got berated. Made fun of. Mocked. I distinctly remember the words “little sorority girl” in the replies. I was so incredibly shocked and hurt. Here I was, innocently (and somewhat desperately I might add) searching for wedding planning advice, and I ended up getting WAY LESS than that. That was the last time I ever posted on a wedding discussion board, and the last time I asked any questions. But you know what? I’m kind of glad. Because in essence, all of those discussion boards are just brides sharing what their own experiences were, or what their friends experienced. It’s not necessarily all RIGHT- it’s kind of like spreading rumors… except it’s the spreading of inaccurate wedding planning information. I don’t know about you, but I would MUCH rather get the RIGHT answers from someone who knows what they’re talking about. Someone who has actually planned more weddings than just their own, and has actually worked at a wedding instead of just attending them. Wouldn’t you?!

The thing is, questions are a GOOD thing. I should have asked more questions- if there had been a place that I could have turned to get answers from PROS, I probably would have used it all the time. I myself love it when people ask me questions! Because answering questions means that I can spread correct and accurate knowledge about wedding planning, and THAT is what my ultimate mission is. :) I suppose it’s a good thing that I had such a hard time finding answers, because it’s one of the major reasons why I started blogging. So all of YOUR won’t have to go through what I did. There should never be any questions unanswered! And that is exactly why I created the Q&A page here on ELD- so it was easy for all of you to ask me questions and get correct and accurate answers!

So today, instead of a specific topic for tips and advice, head on over to the Q&A page and read through what other brides have asked- you might find the answer to one of your own questions! And if you can’t find your answer, just ASK! [If you have multiple questions or just feel like you need help, you can also email me for a one-on-one consultation!]

Hopefully my little trip down memory will help some of you out! I’m curious if any of you have experienced a not-so-pleasant response when searching for answers to your questions… tell me I’m not the only one! ;)

Today’s wedding from Kay Meyer Photography has a little rustic, a little elegant, and a whole lot of inspiration! The colors are a beautiful combination of purple, green, and gray, with a lovely plantation as the backdrop for everything to take place. And my favorite part of this wedding… it’s inspired by herbs! As someone who absolutely loves fresh herbs, I was excited to see how the bride and groom used herbs to inspire their details! The bride Kristin is here with us sharing some insight into the planning of her lovely wedding- take it away Kristin!

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

There were many people that helped us along the way to making our wedding a great success. I come from a crafty family and so a handmade wedding was high on the priority list and a lot of our decisions were based on how free we were to customize. Advice form a random assortment of magazines and blogs helped us organize initially and then seeing friends get married helped with the questions of execution. My mom and friends were a big help in planning and creating all of the pretty details that were a big part of the day. Ā

Our Planner John Gandy was great at taking our ideas and blending it with what he had to create the perfect decor, organizing meetings with our preferred vendors and making sure that our decisions all flowed together and left very little gaps.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

We looked for friendly and creative people who were willing to do some experimenting and didn’t break the bank.

Did any of your vendors do anything special for you before, on, or after your wedding day that you would like to share?

All of our venders were very great to work with and were willing to go above and beyond to ensure we ended up with a great evening to share with our family and friends. Kay Meyer our photographer was excellent the whole process from giving us fun and creative E and B shoots, working with us on unusual requests and being very timely with her production. John Gandy earned his pay the day of by helping it be super streamlined and by taking care of things we didnt even know needed to be done. Karmano’s Printing was the best for our invitations and thank you’s, Amanda worked really hard to get us just what we wanted and was able to utilize my own artwork and turn it into something simply beautiful that all our guests raved about. Our Band the Casey Marshal Group was fabulous. They played GREAT music and kept the music playing as they were tearing down after the reception because we had quite a few friend still dancing and partying on the dance floor long after we ‘left’. Our bartender ‘ On the Rocks’ was simply amazing and put a lot of effort into ensuring the bridal party was taken care of from the moment the ceremony was over and the guests were very pleased with the service. Our venue, Pebble Hill Plantation was the perfect choice because they offered ultimate flexibility in a charming atmosphere that all of our mostly out of town guests adored. They allowed us to let our guests to have carriage rides around the garden,Ā  roam the grounds and tour the Main House Museum freely during cocktail hour which put everyone in a good and excited mood for our entrance, no one was ever bored the whole night.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

My favorite thing was that the momentĀ  the processional music started, both the bridal party and the guests were able to relax and just have an amazing and fun time. We had so many complements from all who attended that it was the most fun they have had at a wedding in a long time.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

Keep things natural and to your personality. The best success comes from knowing you, your guests and your venue well and letting the personalities of them shine through with all of your little details, that’s when your day will be perfect.

Yes, LOVE that advice! Making sure you’re reflecting your personalities is the key to amazing details! :) Thank you for sharing with us Kristin, and a big thank you to Kay Meyer Photography for capturing all of the amazing shots she did!

So what do you all think of the herb-inspired details? I love that each centerpiece was a bit different… and the herb toss for going down the aisle is such a great idea, don’t you think?! I think if my husband and I were to plan our wedding again, we would definitely incorporate herbs into our details. How about you all- will any of you be incorporating herbs or something similar into your wedding?

I am *quite* excited about this inspiration board I have for you all today! Why you ask? Well because it’s the beginnings of my next shoot! I realized that I had been a little stir-crazy lately, and I chalked it all up to the fact that it’s been a few months since I’ve designed an inspiration shoot! The inspiration for this whole shoot is in the board below- before I tell you, I want you to try to guess it…

Inspiration Board: Bold & Bright Color Blocking via TheELD.comRow 1: Color Palette, Bouquet, Drinks, Cake, Invitation

Row 2: Streamers, Plate, Flatware

Row 3: Aisle, Bridesmaids, Cards

Well? Did you guess my inspiration? You may have been able to guess it just from what I titled the board, but it’s that plate! I saw those plates in Target about a month ago, and I kept going back and just staring at them and all of their accessories. I swear- the people who walked by must have thought I was possessed! So I finally just gave in and bought tons of goodies, and now I’m getting things into motion to make a shoot out of it! I absolutely love the variations of the colors- it’s not quite like ombre… I would say it’s more like color blocking. Of course the first step to planning a shoot is creating an inspiration board, and I just had to share it all with you because it’s so very appropriate for today- you know, because it’s MAY- meaning SUMMER- now! (Um, when did that happen?!)

So tell me, what do you think of this inspiration? Do you love it, or is it too bold and bright for your taste? Even better… are any of you using any of these colors for your wedding?!
