Hiring a wedding planner is often the best investment that a bride and groom make. There are a lot of wedding planners out there, each with his or her own set of experiences, ideas and personality. But I’ve heard it asked many times- how do you know who is going to be right for you?

Seven Traits of a Great Wedding Planner via TheELD.com

These traits below may not be first on your checklist when starting your search for a planner, but they are just as important as pricing, packages and portfolios, and you should certainly take them into consideration:

 1. Compassion – Planning a wedding is one of the most stressful and emotional events in life. Having a planner who has empathy and understanding for what you are going through is key to a stress-free and happy engagement. A good wedding planner will also understand how important the wedding is for the parents of the bride and groom and may be able to help those family members through the engagement by truly listening and understanding their concerns and desires for the wedding.

2. Listening more than talking – Wedding planners need to tell you about what we offer and our experience but we should also be listening and asking questions about you. A great wedding planner wants to make your wedding all about YOU and to do that, she must get to know you on a deeper level and really listen to your spoken and unspoken feelings.

3. Good mediation skills – A great wedding planner will mediate issues that arise with your venue and vendors and come up with a win-win solution for everyone. She will also offer guidance and advice to help you deal with family dynamics that may need mediation while you are planning the wedding. Keep in mind that your planner is not a counselor but she can usually give ideas and recommendations that will help.

4. Experience – This sounds obvious right? Does your planner have experience with your particular type of wedding, location or style? For example, tented weddings and weddings at a private home require a more advanced skill set than a wedding at an established venue. A wedding on a mountaintop or on a beach will have certain elements that only an experienced local planner may know about.

5. Processes – Being a planner takes intense levels of organization. Imagine that your wedding planner has ten clients and each of those clients has an average of ten wedding vendors. She may be managing communication with 100 or more people. Does she have a process for planning and how you will work together? Does she have spreadsheets, use software or another way of staying on top of things? It’s important to ask these questions and understand your planner’s processes before booking.

6. Great reviews – No matter how much you like her work or even if a friend made a recommendation for a wedding planner, take time to read reviews online and don’t be afraid to ask for references. Also, ask other wedding vendors for feedback on the wedding planner you are planning to hire.

7. Do you click? – It is so important to feel comfortable, relaxed and confident in your wedding planner. As a bride, you need to be able to share your thoughts and ideas without feeling judged.  A great wedding planning will share her expertise and advice in a positive way and give direction without making you feel bad.

There are of course many absolutely wonderful wedding planners out there who exceed these criteria and so much more. Your planner is a critical component to your happiness throughout the planning process. Take extra time to really get to know him or her before making a decision. A good wedding planner will be the best investment you make for your wedding.

From Shelby of The Day’s Design:

Kellie (of Hetler Photography) and I knew we wanted to do an upbeat, modern styled shoot with lots of sparkle. While we love vintage and it is still very popular in Michigan, we visualized a sleeker event, with lots of downtown glam. As our concept began to unfold, we aimed to define and pinpoint our big city feel. And no city defines big better than the Big Apple!

So why not create an event that Carrie and The Girls would be proud to attend? We completely immersed ourselves in Sex and the City, watching episode after episode and trying to channel our “inner Carries”. We took cues from everything, from Carrie’s newspaper print dress, iconic flower accessories and her love of simply stunning style.

While the décor was definitively a big factor, the fashion was an even bigger one. We wanted not only a gorgeous gown, but also glitzy accessories. A stunning crystal trimmed veil worn to the side served for our bride’s indoor look, while a custom designed tulle hat made the perfect look for our outdoor shots. The ladies at Cheeky Strut did an amazing job bringing the characters to life through hair and make-up.

Our G Rated version of Sex and the City showcases our “little” city as being great as any other. We paired one of Grand Rapids’ urban, warehouse-like venues with sequins and jewels all while keeping a clean, simplistic feel to the space. Modern Day Floral nailed the floral design with oodles of lush peonies and the glamorous ice sculpture was just the perfect amount of extra bling. Modern touches, such as leather couches in the seating area, were paired with wedding classics, such as white plates and chiavari chairs. Our gorgeous real life couple was so amazing to work with ensuring lots of picture-perfect moments, while our lovely ladies added some serious New York attitude. Throw in some martinis, Manolos and a big yellow taxi and we called it the perfect day!

Shelby’s description certainly says everything that I wanted to say about this Sex and the City wedding inspiration. I can tell you one more thing though- I absolutely love it!

So what do you think about pulling wedding inspiration from a favorite TV show or movie? Do you love this Sex and the City-inspired look as much as I do?

I’m so excited to share another beautiful inspiration miniseries with you all this week! [See the other miniseries here!] I actually designed and styled these looks, having been incredibly inspired by the brightness and versatility of the color yellow. Each day this week, I’ll be sharing different looks in ELD’s five wedding styles (modern, rustic, vintage, classic, and eclectic) that showcase color palettes using yellow. We’re starting off with a clean, modern pink and yellow wedding look, featuring florals by FH Weddings & Events, a stunning dress from Malindy Elene Bridal, hair and makeup by Michele Renee Hair & Makeup Studio, and invitations by Simply Designed! And lucky for us, Caroline & Evan Photography captured this pink and yellow beauty in both digital and film photographs- y’all are in for a treat!

I went with an underlying “ribbon” theme for some of the elements, like the Mr & Mrs chair signs, the table number, and the escort cards. I love it when there is some kind of “theme” to go along with- it makes designing so much easier!

I’d love to hear what your favorite part of this modern look is! I think mine is the escort cards- always a favorite of mine! :) Keep an eye out for the other looks from this miniseries each day this week- *SO* much great inspiration!

I love how this classic Florida wedding from Amalie Orrange Photography is gorgeously timeless, with a fun Southwestern feel! From the Spanish tile favors to the Tex Mex menu, this Texas bride brought a Southwestern flair to sunny Florida, and I’m pretty much obsessed. The stunning bride, Haley, is here today to share her planning insight with us:

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

Becky Morgan with L.I.F.E. Events was instrumental through my wedding planning process, and on wedding day she was a complete gem! Becky and her team took charge from beginning to end, allowing myself, family and friends to simply relax and enjoy the day.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

The most important thing to me when deciding who to work with for my wedding was my connection with the vendor and having the confidence that they understood my vision and I could completely trust their expertise. Once I was able to solidify my core vendors, venue/caterer, planner, photographer and florist; I really leaned on them for referrals for everything else, and because I had a connection with them, I could easily trust their recommendations.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

My inspiration for my wedding details and design was the beautiful venue. Casa Feliz in Winter Park is such a gorgeous, historic venue, I wanted my wedding to showcase and compliment the house rather than compete with it. Our menu and details had a Spanish touch coinciding with the venue’s design. My goal for the wedding was for it to be simple and effortless yet classic and elegant.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

My favorite thing about the wedding, besides marrying my best friend, was a close tie between our Spanish/Tex-Mex inspired menu and the Mexican tile coaster wedding favors. It is so fun to hear from friends and family that the coasters are now a staple in their homes and offices.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

My best piece of advice for brides is to hire vendors that you have a real connection with. I truly believe our wedding was so wonderful because I let the professionals do their job rather than trying to direct their every move.

Awesome advice, Haley! I must say, one of my favorite things about this wedding are the amazing favors. The tile coasters were the perfect way to tie in the bride’s Texas roots as well as remind their guests of the beyond gorgeous Spanish inspired venue. Brides, are y’all planning a special favor for your guests? I’d love to hear all of your wonderful ideas!

Happy Planning!
Carlee
