Today’s wedding comes to us from Ashley Daniell Photography and is just full of details! With a “country meets coast” theme inspired by the couple’s hometowns, this aqua and orange wedding is both beautiful and inspiring…

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

My dad (surprisingly) helped me most with the planning process. Dad gathered the drift wood from the beaches in my home town, constructed the arbor, talked wedding talk with me, put SO much thought in to the in details like having s’mores at the fire pit and making sure the dance floor stayed alive, lastly he laid for it!!!

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

The most important thing when choosing who to work with for the wedding was to stay within budget, while being sure everything was what I wanted. Our venue was beautiful, so it didn’t take much decor to add to it. I did a lot of research on people who could create my vision (or a low scale version of it) for a reasonable price.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

The inspiration for our wedding was “country meets coast”. I grew up in Panama City while my husband is from Montgomery, Alabama. I have also lived in Alabama for about 5 years so Alabama is now my home. I wanted to combine the two. Guests drank out of mason jars while the table were decorated with sand dollars and star fish.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

My favorite part of my wedding was seeing my husband,Kelso at the end of the aisle. A close second would be waking up to a surprise breakfast from my bridesmaids and getting to spend the weekend with my girls.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

My best advice for brides would be this: something is going to go wrong on your wedding day, but go into knowing that. If you prepare yourself mentally that the flowers might arrive late or the dj plays the wrong first dance song it’s easier to not get your feathers ruffled.

Wasn’t that gorgeous!? I loved that the bride and groom used their lives as inspiration for their “country meets coast” theme!

Are you planning your theme around your life experiences, or maybe an experience the two of you have had together?

I can’t wait to hear all about it!

Cheers!
Samm

Recently here on ELD, we talked about the truth of what weddings really cost. Since then, I’ve also spoken to quite a few brides who weren’t sure about how to create their wedding budgets.  So to continue our discussion about what wedding costs and budgets,  I thought we could chat more about wedding budgets in general- because you’re not expected to know what things should cost, right? (I know I had no clue, and had no one to tell me!)

Wedding Budget 101 via TheELD.com

I started off with what weddings really cost because there is a big issue in wedding planning, and it all stems from couples not knowing what to *expect* things to cost. When you don’t know what a budget and price range for one of your vendors is, you can’t plan well. When you can’t plan for the correct and accurate amount to allot to a vendor or service, then all of your other vendors suffer too. For example- you allow for $10,000 for your flowers and decor, but then you only have $2,000 left in your budget- and you still need a DJ, photographer, videographer, and limo. So then, you’ve committed to $10,000, but have to lower it to $2,000 to afford all of the other services that you need for your wedding. And then your vision of a wedding with $10,000 decor is going to be stuck in your mind already, and when you see your wedding with $2,000 decor, you’re going to be a little disappointed. (Now this is a little bit extreme, but something similar has indeed happened to me in my previous life as a wedding designer.)

So how do you avoid encountering this issue? You create your wedding budget based on percentages of your total budget. The following are my recommendations for the percentages you should be allotting for the major areas of your budget.

Wedding Budget 101 via TheELD.com

WEDDING BUDGET RECOMMENDATIONS

Reception-Venue & Food: 45%

Photography & Videography: 18%

Florals & Decor: 15%*

Planner: 10%

Paper goods: 6%

Entertainment: 4%

Miscellaneous: 2%**

*Sometimes part of this budget is included in the reception budget, depending on your linens and rentals

**Includes all other vendors that are not listed above!

Note: The above areas are by no means ALL of what is needed for a wedding or what is required, but they are a good general starting point and rule of thumb. Please also refer to other budget recommendations to determine the perfect budget formula for you and your wedding.

Wedding Budget 101 via TheELD.com

I have created an Excel spreadsheet that contains formulas that work with these percentages. Click above to access the spreadsheet!

Once you have these percentages figured out for your budget, you can then adjust everything according to what matters more to you and add in other things that you need. Do you want a wedding that has fabulous design and decor with some awesome photography, but don’t really care much about the venue? Spend less on your venue and food, and transfer over more “percentage” for the things you really want. Give a little and take a little.

If you want to stick to your budget, it definitely helps to have guidelines, especially so you’re not dreaming up things you can’t have. When inquiring with vendors, maybe even ask them what their average bride spends with them. Chances are, they definitely know, and it’s better to ask them outright instead of avoiding the money topic and wasting your and the vendor’s time. (I know I myself would rather have had brides ask me that right away.) Bottom line- do your research and plan ahead! [Or, you could just get a wedding planner, have he or she help you with it all, and then not have to worry about any of it. ;)]

With a fun, bright coral and blue color palette and a relaxed “vintage picnic” theme, Jessica and Michael’s Florida wedding was everything that they wanted and more, and Caroline & Evan Photography captured it all beautifully! Incorporating an eclectic array of vintage elements in with lace and greenery, Ideal Design Events created a wedding design that reflected Jessica and Michael perfectly, and I’m excited to share it with you all today!

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?

The person who helped me the most was Michael (my new wonderful husband). He was extremely hands on and was active in every step of the process. All of the ideas, colors, music…we selected together as a team effort.  We had a destination wedding so having a wedding planner to execute those ideas was very important. On my wedding day it was our family and friends who were there by our sides.

What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?

As a photographer, the most important thing on my list was my was having remarkable pictures and photographers that I felt I could fully trust and feel at ease with. I didn’t want to have to point out photo opportunities and and discuss lighting on my wedding day. I also wanted someone who understood and could capture our style as a couple. It took a lot of searching and interviewing but I found Caroline and Evan and Im so glad I did. They really are an amazing team, they captured every detail and every tender moment with amazing composition. The pictures are creative, colorful and they certainly pull at your heart strings.

What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?

We are both pretty creative people so we wanted our wedding to reflect that and have little details that would showcase parts of our personalities and passions . We also wanted the atmosphere to be relaxed and fun so we went with a “vintage picnic” theme. We took our time to look through websites, magazine and pinterest as well as come up a few original ideas of our own.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding?

It’s hard to pick just one part but I would have to say our ceremony, saying “I Do” to my best friend. We both wrote our ceremony and that was very personal for us. It was also a way for us to share with our guest what really brought us to get married.

What is your best piece of advice for other brides?

The best advice I could give any bride is try to plan to have an hour at your reception where you have no obligation to cut the cake, take pictures or toss the bouquet. Take that hour to soak it all in, look at every detail, relax and socialize with your guest. You worked really hard for this day and you should relish in it.  It’s amazing how fast the time will fly by.

What great advice- and it’s so very true!

I love the “vintage picnic” theme that Jessica and Michael chose to go with. Fun, relaxed, and perfect for them!

WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE: SLOW DOWN via TheELD.com

“Take a deep breath and remember to enjoy the process without rushing – don’t try to plan your whole wedding in the first week of your engagement! Working through each piece slowly and thoughtfully allows you to appreciate every step along the way as you plan your walk down the aisle.”
