Gorgeous and filled with fun, unique details, this backyard Maryland wedding from Katelyn James Photography is amazing! From hay bales and big open fields, to a giant dartboard and handpainted table runners, the inspiration in this wedding is like none other. The beautiful bride, Lauren, is here with us sharing about her wedding planning, so sit back, soak it all in, and enjoy!
What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?
Morgan and I did a lot of the planning ourselves and he built basically everything!! My in-laws played such a big role in helping us accomplish all our DIY projects!! I’m so grateful for them!! I also used Pinterest to gather a lot of ideas!!
What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?
Well, I’m also a wedding photographer, so picking Katelyn as our photographer was super important to me! I treasure our images! In addition, I absolutely love working with Renee from Blossom & Basket. She took the vision I had and made it even more beautiful!! So grateful for her!!
What was your inspiration for your wedding details and/or design?
One of my favorite pieces was the dartboard! That inspiration came from the movie Princess Diaries! It was something I always wanted to try and so why not do it on our wedding day?! Like I said before, I also got a lot of inspiration from Pinterest and then we just created the projects ourselves!!
What was your favorite thing about your wedding?
My favorite thing about our wedding was definitely the people! As beautiful as the day was and as hard as we all worked on the details of the day, our wedding wouldn’t have been the same without our loving family and friends!!
What is your best piece of advice for other brides?
My advice is to not sweat the small stuff! In almost any wedding day something will go slightly wrong- for us it was so windy that everything was getting blown off the table and we had to put sides up on our tent! The thing is that at the end of the day, as long as you’re married to your best friend, that’s all that matters!! Keep that in mind whenever you’re stressing out about anything else!!
Oh my goodness- did you see the exit with giant marshmallows?! That is SO fun!! And the giant dartboard of balloons filled with paint- GENIUS!
Are you doing any unique details like Lauren did for her wedding? What will you be doing?

Awww LAUREN and Kaitlyn!!! These are AMAZING! Lauren, wonderful job on the details!!! Kaitlyn, amazing job on capturing the details! CONGRATS!! xoxo
With all the well thought out coordination, the theme was successful — the couple looks like they genuinely had fun with the day. The painting project (which brought me here initially — what a great idea for their new home!) however…1) seems to be an underwhelming let-down — I expected the canvas to be full of colors as opposed to nearly imperceptibly “washed” and 2) the “after” photo of the canvas looks like a bunch of used condoms hangin’ in the breeze. Cool concept; perhaps the image of the next completed project could be post-balloon removal.
Beautiful photography and beautiful wedding! May I ask what the venue was?
