Why do you see yourself as being Modern, Vintage, Classic, or Eclectic?

Classic all the way. I’m drawn to timeless design in all things and I want my work to be the same. We try to achieve powerful and compelling photos with light and emotion, not necessarily stylistic editing. Said another way; it’s about whats going on in the photo, not what we can do to the photo.

What is your favorite wedding detail you’ve ever seen or created?

I knew you’d ask that! Here goes… I’ve shot countless of cool shoes, rings, stationery and place settings. They get more creative and beautiful every year.

As far as my favorite, it’d have to be from a wedding I shot a wedding last summer. The wedding was held on the family’s ranch in the mountains of eastern Oklahoma. It’s a breathtaking piece of land. The bride, Raegan, had grown up going to that land and has a childhood of memories there. She always said she wanted to get married there, and she did. Her husband, Brandon, proposed there under a tree that had this carving. I thought it was perfect. It was real, and had an amazing story behind it.

What is your favorite store or brand?

Keep in mind, I’m a guy so this may not ring a bell : ) I love BillyKirk-They’re leather craftsmen from NYC. I strive for true craftsmanship in my personal life and in my work and these guys are true craftsmen.

What is your favorite thing about weddings?

It’d have to be the process of seeking out meaningful moments and relationships. Powerful moments don’t just jump out at you and say “take my photo now”. You have to be inquisitive and observe body language. I really enjoy shooting details and portraits, and I see that as completely central to documenting a wedding. That said; I always find it a rewarding challenge to try and document the unseen little moments as well.

What qualities do you possess that enable you to work well with brides and grooms?

Before I jumped into photography full time, I was a youth and college pastor. I think those years spent working in the Church, if nothing else, gave me a unique tool of perception. It was my job to be a servant and meet people’s needs. I still carry that into the service I give my clients. In addition to the fact that my father and my grandfather are entrepreneurs and run their own businesses. My Grandpa was a printing press repairman and my Dad is a carpenter by trade. I’ve grown up watching them cherish the relationships with their customers and seen their businesses grow on that foundation.

What steps do you take to ensure that your clients will have amazing wedding days when working with you?

I’m best described as “even keel”. It takes a lot to get me super excited. In the same respect, I don’t get stressed easily . As a wedding photographer, stress is part of the job. I’ve had the chance to meet accomplished photographers outside of the wedding industry and they always express something along the lines of “I can’t shoot a wedding, it’s way too stressful”. Well, if you want to be a wedding photographer, you eat stress for breakfast.
I think the ability to walk into any situation, with varying lighting and time constraints out of your control and create something beautiful and compelling is a great challenge. I want my brides to be able to take a deep breathe when I’m around, be themselves and enjoy the fleeting moments.
