As some of you may know, I’m BIG on wedding styles. (That’s why I created the Wedding Style Dictionary!) But as unimportant as it sounds, knowing your wedding style is incredibly important for when you start planning your wedding. Actually, it’s the very first thing you should be doing when you start planning your wedding! I don’t want to repeat myself about how to find your style- this post will help you with that- but here are a few things that will be SO much easier to do once you’ve decided on your style…

Choosing your date. Your date is of course the very first thing you do. But you need to know what the style of your wedding will be so you can choose the correct date. Why? Weather, flower availability, and most importantly….
Choosing your venue. Even though this is also one of the first things that you need to do, you shouldn’t even do this until you know the style of your wedding. Your wedding shouldn’t be defined by your venue, and vice versa. You really can’t have a “vintage rustic” wedding in a swanky ballroom. It can be done, but it would be much better done at Uncle Bob’s farm. If you know your wedding style before selecting your venue, you won’t have to worry about any of that.
Buying your wedding dress. Even though your dress is more of a reflection of your personal style, your wedding style should also be a reflection of this. But don’t buy until you know what style of wedding you’re having. Not all wedding dresses are created equal.
Choosing bridesmaids dresses. See above.
Decor. For me, decor is defined as the whole look of your wedding. Which is very much the style. But this also includes flowers, any DIY projects, and all that kind of stuff. Gather inspiration, yes. But don’t decide on anything without your wedding style in mind. :)
Favors. Ah, favors. I feel like favors are the bane of lots of brides’ existence. Some know right off the bat what they want to do for favors, because it’s a favorite wine, cookie, candy, etc etc. But some of you can’t think of a favor for the life of you. And don’t feel bad- because that’s the case most of the time. Use your wedding style to help you come up with your favor. Having a glamorous wedding? Well, then a koozie isn’t going to be the best fit for your favor.
Essentially, you shouldn’t even be doing any of these things or thinking of them until you know your wedding style. Everything hinges on the style of your wedding. It would be like… buying ingredients for a recipe that you don’t have yet, working on a project with zero guidelines, or making dinner reservations when you don’t know the number of people coming. So, in a nutshell- the VERY FIRST decision you should be making when planning your wedding? Your wedding’s STYLE!
