I’m so excited about this Pro Insight post today from the newest photographer in Every Last Vendor, D’Avello Photography! It’s yummy looking too, so beware of potential cravings! ;)

When I first “met” (okay, really just exchanged emails with…)  Brynn of D’Avello Photography, she mentioned that she and her husband had done a “cheesy” blog post about how to cut wedding cake. She sent me the link, and I told her that it was anything BUT cheesy- it’s informative and a perfect post for Pro Insight! Which leads us to today’s post! Take it away Brynn!

I have never understood the phrase, “Have your cake and eat it too.” For me, there’s nothing else to do with cake other than to eat it! There is a lot that goes into designing your wedding cake. Cake flavors, frosting type, color, decorations, unique toppers, special cutting tools… I could go on. One detail that most couples overlook until the moment is upon them is the actual cutting of the cake. It’s a simple thing right? Cutting the cake; we’ve all done it at one point or another for a birthday or special occasion. This time, however, all eyes are on you… what if you do it wrong? Where should you stand? Which tier do you cut into?

As photographers, we get that slightly panicked look that screams, “What do we do now!?”  I am always giving whispered instructions to our couples, so when we ordered our anniversary cake we decided to make a How to Cut the Wedding Cake step-by-step tutorial. Saving the top tier is an option for couples that want to save it for their first anniversary, if you decide to save the top of your cake, the catering company or your coordinator will usually box it up for you when they begin serving out the slices to the guests.

Step 1: If you have hired a planner they will give you a heads up when you should cut the cake. If you are sans planner your catering manager will let you know, or possibly your DJ or photographer depending on who has shouldered the time management responsibilities for the day. Your photographer will give you directions where to stand for the best lighting. You’ll want to stand where you can both hold the cake knife to cut into the bottom tier, but still both be in the frame for the picture. And just like your first kiss, don’t rush it! Give your photographer time to catch the moment.

Step 2: Both the bride & groom cut a small triangular piece from the bottom tier together and place it on your plate. This is your last moment to establish a truce before you open up for your new spouse to feed you cake… or to plan your attack.

Step 3: Cut into bite-size pieces and then feed each other the pieces. Most brides have spent lots of time (and money) on hair and makeup, not to mention their dress, so smashing it on their face is not cool. And ladies remember that men are competitive spirits and will put frosting on your face if you smear some on his.

It seems so simple, but cutting your wedding cake is something that you never really think about with all the wedding planning hooplah! But when it’s time to cut the cake and someone hands you the cake knife, you suddenly realize that you’re clueless about what to do! Well not anymore if you’re an ELD reader, and it’s all thanks to Brynn and Mike of D’Avello Photography! :)

such great tips – I actually had a mini panic attack – okay it wasn’t that bad – but I did freak a little when we were about to cut the cake. I thought that once I cut into it, it was going to topple over. I had never cut a cake with that many tiers and It was a smidge scary :)
